Tranquil and simple camping in the wonderfully unspoiled Dordogne countryside

With well over 250 campsites in the Dordogne to choose from, why opt for Camping Lune Sur Le Lac? For one thing, you won’t find a more accommodating hosts than Jo and Ian if you tried. Maybe their happiness is because they get to enjoy this stunning and tranquil location all year round. It rarely rains here and Jo and Ian's modest, picture-postcard campsite sits elevated on a hill overlooking its own fishing lake and 69 acres, ensuring Camping Lune Sur Le Lac stands out from the regular campsite crowd.

Open since 2015, Camping Lune Sur Le Lac is traditional camping as it should be: simple, unpretentious and what estate agents would call 'wonderfully appointed'. That being the case, the site is fairly minimal in terms of facilities; there are all the essentials like electric points, hot water and showers in the new ablution block, as well as laundry facilities and Wi-Fi (at a small premium). Standard pitches are generously sized at 150sqm, whilst campers can upgrade to either a ‘comfort pitch’ with electric and water, or a cool ‘dog pitch’, where your four-legged friend can wander free within a privately fenced area.

On the sightseeing front, the beautiful town of Monpazier offers several highlights. Established in 1284 by a representative of Edward I of England, Monpazier had a tempestuous time during the 16th centuries Peasant Revolts and Wars of Religion. But despite these many assaults, the town has survived remarkably unscathed, with original gates, walls and a church. Other villages worth checking out are Belvès with its yellow-gold dwellings strung across a sublime hilltop, and Villefranche-du-Périgord, with its huge covered market in the central square.

Strolling around those wonderfully charming villages and markets will be the only time during your stay here when you break into more than an amble. That’s just the kind of place it is. And when you’re as pretty as Camping Lune Sur Le Lac is, surrounded by lush green hills, turquoise blue lakes and fabulous food and wine, what’s the rush?

As well as the 10 pitches, there’s 1 permanently stationed caravan for rent. New shower block, laundry facilities, Wi-Fi available on each pitch (for additional charge). A 4-acre lake for fresh water swimming and an on site swimming pool are both are included in the site fees.

Suitable For

Tents, motorhomes, caravans, trailer-tents, large groups and dogs are all welcome.

Belves is a lovely and lively medieval town, with a preserved 15th century covered market hall. Listed as 'one of the most beautiful villages in France', the town centre has some troglodyte dwellings that date from around the 13th century and a 14th century castle. The 'town of seven bell towers' is a wonderful place to enjoy a pleasant afternoon wandering the streets and alleys. Chateau de Biron (0033 553 631 339) stands on a hilltop and can be seen from dozens of vantage points in the area. Try and see the castle when it catches the early morning sun if possible. Biron village itself is also very picturesque. There is a small café, a few houses, and a short way down the hill leads you to the lovely village church. If you have little ones, Parc en Ciel (0033 553 718 458) is a great day out for the whole family. There’s a tree adventure park, a large natural pool and mini-golf. The whole site has been attractively planted with a pleasant mix of shrubs and flowers.

Food & Drink

There are plenty of great restaurants you can visit. Chez Minou is a great Pizzeria with plenty of charm, a firm favourite, Bistro 2 combines modern French dining in an old town setting, with a wisteria covered terrace opposite a medieval gateway. Enjoy the best of the regions cuisine in one of three restaurants Hôtel Edward 1er ‘Eleanor’ is the intimate gourmet restaurant, Privilège du Perigord and Restaurant La Bastide are traditional and contemporary with delicious French cuisine. Monpazier has plenty of everyday supermarkets and specialist local produce. As this is the "land of the duck", you can be sure to find plenty of pâté and foie gras at the many market butchers. Other local specialties include truffles, goose, walnuts and cheese (of course!).

All year round.
