Everyone is welcome at this campsite with a pool in Brittany's Forest of Brocéliande

An hour and a half south of the ferry port at St Malo and half an hour west of the French city of Rennes is the Forest of Brocéliande. It’s said to be as magical as it sounds, full of ancient sites, myths and legends; many associated with King Arthur. There’s Merlin’s tomb, beautiful châteaux and even the Fountain of Eternal Youth. If that’s piqued your interest, then how about a stay at Camping Merlin L’Enchanteur?

Situated on the edge of the little village of Loyat, the magic of this campsite is restricted to its name. But, and it’s a big but, it is well-placed to explore the region’s myths and legends — and it’s a perfectly pleasant campsite. It offers spacious pitches, easy access to village facilities and a swimming pool. And sometimes that’s all you need.

Whether you are staying for a few days en route to another location or camping out for a week or two, you’ll appreciate the size of the pitches here. There are 65 of them in a green part of the site that’s dotted with mature trees, while elsewhere there are rows of mobile homes. There are hot showers, flushing loos and a covered swimming pool — but there’s no kids club, shop or bar. Instead, campers are encouraged to immerse themselves in French life and use local services. Just outside the site is a bar, Tabac and shop offering basic provisions and the rest of the village, though small and quiet, provides everything else you should need: a bakery within walking distance for your morning croissants, a Boucherie for barbecue supplies.

Bringing a bicycle here is a wise idea as a fantastic traffic-free cycle route that passes close by offers a link to lovely and livelier spots. After a few kilometres you can be at Lac Au Duc where swimming, watersports and lakeside walks are on offer. A few kilometres further and you’ll reach Ploërmel, a typical French town where there are plenty of places to eat out and to stock up on supplies. To find the magic of the region, you’ll need to explore further. Pick up a map of the Forest of Brocéliande and take a self-guided tour to Paimpont, to Josselin and, perhaps, to find eternal youth from that fountain. But before you go, a little disclaimer should be issued: according to legend, it’s only available to those who turn up barefoot at midnight on the summer solstice, having lived a perfect life. Good luck.
