Easy glamping with dogs allowed in the foothills of the Massif des Monédières in Corrèze

There’s a catchy French pop song with lyrics that ask the question: “How can I forget this corner of paradise?” Is it talking of the Dordogne, the Loire Valley or the French Riviera? No — it’s talking of Corrèze. The area that neighbours the Dordogne seems to occupy a special place in the hearts of its countrymen but — to us Brits at least — is infinitely less well known. And therein lies part of its charm. It’s quiet but dramatic countryside; full of lakes and forested peaks. To stay among them, in this little corner of paradise, head for the glamping tents of Le Ranch.

It was sitting atop one of those peaks that Brits Mike and Hayley decided to take the plunge and buy the plot of land that became Le Ranch Camping. Now, a few years later, their site has come of age. Four glamping bell tents and a couple of camping pitches occupy a meadow out back of their house, on the edge of the tiny village of Madranges.

There’s a lotus bell tent, a yurt and two safari tents with hot tubs (or cold plunge pools for when the temperatures hit the highs). Each is decked out for family stays, though not too big for couples. The beds are made, there’s electric hook-up and there’s a covered kitchen outside with outdoor seating. Elsewhere on-site, you’ll find table tennis, a small over-ground pool and a little honesty shop with coffee and ice cream for sale. This is France, of course, so morning bread and croissant deliveries are a staple and, at the other end of the day, you can eat from the small on-site pizzeria.

It’s a handy service Hayley has introduced, as there’s no place to eat out in Madranges. This is the foothills of the Massif des Monédières and, in fact, the only thing you can reach on foot or by bike is the great outdoors; there’s plenty of that to see with 30 peaks stretching up to 900 metres. You can walk to the outlook that clinched the deal for Mike and Hayley, Puy du Suc au May, in an hour and 40 minutes or drive 10km to the closest lake for swimming. Lac Baroiusses, is one of many in the region with supervised swimming in summer and paddleboards, kayaks and pedalos for hire. Nearby Treignac will fulfill any shopping needs and is a lovely place for coffee, people watching and meandering among medieval buildings.

Nearby

Our nearest lake is Lac Baroiusses just north of Treignac, as well as sunbathing on its sandy beach, you can enjoy swimming and fishing all year and for July and August the Station Sports Nature is open with canoeing-kayak, sailing, pedalo and stand up paddling, mountain biking. From May - September the Cote Ti Plage restaurant and bar is open with snacks and sit down meals.  Another swimming lake with a beach, is Lac de Bournazel at Seilhac with supervised swimming in July and August, diving board, fishing, Pedalo, canoe and kayak hire. A smaller more tranquil lake is at Chaumeil, nestled in the heart of the Massif des Monédières, with its water wheel and stunning setting. The lake has supervised swimming for July and August only. Le Ranch Camping is in an ideal place for a hiking or cycling. The Monédières massif has around thirty puys (mountains with rounded profiles), the highest of which is La Monédière, and then the massif’s second highest point, the unmissable (and our favourite spot) Puy du Suc au May this approximately a 1 hour 40 minutes walk from Le Ranch Camping, it offers superb views of the Monédières and the Auvergne mountains. We are very lucky be place at the foot of two flying points for paragliding, we often see them flying from the campsite. We work closely with a local company who can offer tandem flights just minutes from the campsite. We have even had a flight our self and can recommend their services.

Food & Drink

Treignac is our nearest local town to Le Ranch Camping, here you will find a lovely medieval old town, plenty of small winding little streets and pretty buildings. There is a walking tourist trail which you can either follow by yourself, or, through the summer season, there are guided tours. Treignac also has most of the basic amenities you may require. There are several restaurants to choose from in the town itself, also, on the outskirts is La Plage, a beach area with water based activities and a beach bar restaurant.

There are many small pretty villages to visit in the area where you can explore and wonder around the old cobble streets soaking up the history , go shopping at the local markets or just sit with a coffee and watch the world go by.

Brive-la-Gaillarde and Limoges are larger towns/cities with a more cosmopolitan feel, perfect to go shopping and enjoy larger markets, Brive has the famous Georges Brassen food market, open on on a Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday morning. Both these towns have airports which operate to the UK and France.

We are very lucky to have our neighbour Stéphane who produces craft beer. The Brasserie des Anges (Brewery) is based in Chamboulive around 10 minutes drive from us. The production of the beer is 100% traditional and ancestral. The beers of the Brasserie des Anges are the result of cooking over a wood fire and are fermented in oak barrels. The bar is open on a Friday from 18.00h and visits at other times can be arranged by prior arrangement
