Family friendly camping in Aveyron that's as close to the rivers as you can get

While the historic town of Millau squeezes itself within a meander of the River Tarn, it’s the local campsite that reaps the real rewards of the riverside location. Across a bridge from the town centre and set along a tree-lined bank where the River Dourbie converges, this family-orientated campsite has the best of both stretches of water. After all, why have one sunny beach on your doorstep when you can have two?

It’s a hop and skip from the waters edge into the shrubbery of the campsite, a combination of tall mature trees in regimented rows and younger greening bushes. The best of the pitches (and the ones you have to pay slightly more for) are on the riverside itself, where you can wake up, whack your bacon on the camp-stove and slide across the pebbles for a morning dip. The flow is slow and safe, even if the water has a bracing chill at times!

For the few that don’t spend all their time dabbling in the river, there is a heated swimming pool too. It’s a feature that reflects just how well endowed this campsite is in terms of facilities – there’s also a small grocery shop in the reception, free WiFi, a snack-bar, playground and boules pitch. In keeping with essential French custom you can, of course, order fresh baguettes and croissants each morning. No self-respecting French campsite would deny you that.

Across the Bridge, Millau has everything else you need, including a clutch of museums and a tourist information centre that will help you get your bearings. The real attractions of the region, however, are not the urban ones. Kayaking, canoeing and walking in the surrounding valley are top of the list and this is also France’s centre for paragliding. The campsite is, after all, in the centre of the Grands Causses regional natural park. So get out there and enjoy it!

There's a heated swimming pool, a paddling pool and surrounding wooden decking with a snack bar and pizza restaurant during peak season. A central lodge with internet and free Wi-Fi, a small grocery store, a playground, boules pitch, table tennis and indoor board games. 'Camper's corner' shop for any essentials you've forgotten, a library corner and tourist information in reception. Activities for children throughout school holidays.

Suitable For

Tents, campervans, motorhomes, caravans, families, groups, couples, pets… everyone!

The two shady beaches of the Dourbie and the Tarn can be reached directly from the campsite. The water is safe and shallow enough for swimming and popular for canoeing and kayaking. In the town itself, you should start at the tourist information centre (05 65 60 02 42; a great spot for organising days out in the surrounding Grands Causses regional natural park – hiking, paragliding, watersports and more) and also take a wander in the Jardin botanique des Causses (a botanical garden). The town church – Église Notre-Dame-de-l'Espinasse – is also worth popping into. It allegedly once held a part of Jesus' crown of thorns (making it an important pilgrimage centre in the Middle Ages) but was destroyed in 1582. Today's structure is a 17th century re-build with wonderful stained glass windows. Just to the west of town, gargantuan Millau Viaduct (05 65 61 61 61) is one of the worlds tallest road bridges and definitely worth driving across at some point on your travels. Top Gear fans, in particular, will recognise it from TV.

Food & Drink

The bar-restaurant onside serves excellent homemade pizzas, along with a host of other snacks and drinks best enjoyed out on the terrace. It's only open over the May public holidays and through July and August. Outside of those times there are still plenty of great eateries in Millau. It's a 15 minute walk into the town centre.

April – October.
