Campsites in Picardie guide

Overview

One of two historical regions (along with Nord-pas-de-Calais) that now form the Hauts-de-France, Picardie is a land of forested hills, riverside cathedral cities, and wild beaches. This is where the notorious Battle of the Somme was fought during WWI, and battlefields, memorials, and war cemeteries dot the countryside. Campers have plenty of options here, especially if you want to escape the crowds―you’ll find family campgrounds, municipal campsites, and aires (motorhome parks) close to all the main sights. And if you get bored of the quiet life, the bright lights of Paris and the vineyards of Champagne are just a day trip away.

Where to go

Somme

Picardie’s three departments are named after their respective rivers―the Somme, Aisne, and Oise―with the northernmost straddling the Somme River. Amiens, famous for its Gothic cathedral and floating gardens, is the headline act, but the maritime town of Abbeville and the beach resort of Fort-Mahon-Plage make equally popular bases. Check into a riverside campground from where you can explore WWI trenches, go kayaking along scenic waterways, or cycle through the countryside.

Aisne

In the east, bordering Champagne-Ardenne, the Aisne department is most famous for the Chemin des Dames, an open-air museum of WWI battlefields and memorials that runs along a 25-mile (40-kilometre) stretch of the western front. Away from the trenches, the forested countryside affords ample opportunities to camp, and highlights include the picturesque village of Parfondeval and the walled town of Laon.

Oise

Oise―pronounced “Wazz”―borders Paris’ northern suburbs and is home to the Parc Asterix and La Mer du Sable theme parks. Once you’ve had your fix of family fun, complete your regional sightseeing tour with a visit to the cathedral city of Beauvais, the fairy-tale Château de Pierrefonds, and Gerberoy, listed as one of the “most beautiful villages in France.”
