Rolling fields with the sea on the horizon, and both a seaside town and the seaside itself within walking distance

Your arrival at Manor Farm is just the thing for creating the right atmosphere. As you pootle along between the cobbled and flint barns, and high hedgerows brushing your car on both sides, the site jumps into view. The camping fields are at the top of the hill, with the seaside town of Cromer a mere 10 minutes’ walk away. And in the distance, like an ironed-out pancake, you’ll see the open blue of the sea.

It’s a good view, and feels like a suitably remote spot to pitch your tent, even though you can walk so easily into town. The fact that you reach the campsite via the farm track and there are no roads near by mean you can let the kids run wild without worrying too much about traffic thundering past.

And boy do they have the space to roam around here – this site is seriously sprawling. And while it’s pretty, the pace is far from being twee, so avoiding the blazer-clad crowds of ‘Chelsea-on- Sea’ at nearby Burnham Market. Instead, you can stroll through charmingly old fashioned East Runton village, at the bottom of the campsite’s slope, an on to the local beach – a pebbly affair with excellent rock pools full of glistening sea shells and tiny scuttling crabs.

Manor Farm is a family-owned working farm, so there are lambs and calves to see if you happen to be visiting at Easter, and ponies to pet all year round. The place feels wild, and yet you have all the advantages of a small seaside town on your doorstep. It’s an ideal combination. And, surveyed over a fresh cuppa from the on-site Cabin Café, there are few spots around here we would rather pitch our tent.

There are 250 standard and serviced pitches, spread across 18 acres. Marlpit and Moll’s Meadow are the fields that also take caravans, and Gurney’s Plantation is just for caravans and tourers. The site feels sprawling, but the facilities are never too far away, with 2 shower blocks in each field. One block has a family shower and one has a family shower room. There are also 2 laundry rooms with coin-operated washing machines and dryers. Freezers are provided.

Suitable For

Tents, campervans, caravans, dogs, groups (max. 4 pitches) – yes.

The beaches at Cromer and Sheringham are the main local attractions, and you can walk through the site into the village, with its pretty green, swings and slides, to the beach at East Runton. The beach is pretty quiet, with good rock pools and nice views to Cromer pier. It’s a sweet, old-fashioned village, with a butcher, tea room, fish-and-chip shop, even an excellent Army Surplus store and a hairdresser, so all essentials covered if you are suddenly struck with a desire to get a perm. You can catch the North Norfolk Railway, a steam train in Sheringham going to Weybourne and Holt.

Food & Drink

Cromer is packed with fish-and-chip shops and old-fashioned cafés. The Victorian Tea Room (01263 517154) on Meadow Road is one of the best. No 1 (01263 515983), owned by television chef Galton Blackiston, is generally considered to be the top fish & chip shop in Cromer and also has geat sea views from the updtairs dining room. The Pepperpot Restaurant (01263 837578) in West Runton is fantastic, too, but a little more expensive. For local meat try Icarus Hines the butcher (01263 514541), in Cromer, or the farm shop at Groveland Farm in Roughton (01263 833777).

March–end of October.
