Let's face it, for all the bells and whistles, sometimes there's just no getting around the fact that some glampsites simply take a bit of getting used to. With expectations understandably high, often it seems you're set up for a disappointment. But the ease with which you slip into the relaxed atmosphere at Suffolk Retreats is simply seamless.
Set within 9 acres of idyllic grounds on the outskirts of the village of Hundon, Suffolk Retreats offers the perfect destination for both families and couples. Overlooking a large, tranquil pond and Hundon Grange, a grade II listed property in which the owners reside, the two Mongolian style yurts (complete with wood-burning stoves for added cosiness) are fully equipped and furnished for a hassle-free glamping experience. If you're away for that special anniversary, your accommodating hosts can even arrange a special champagne breakfast – complete with chocolates and flowers, naturally.
The surrounding countryside is abuzz with interesting wildlife, the focal point for which is the large fish-inhabited lake ("feed 'em don't fish 'em"). Tell your little ones to keep their eyes and ears peeled for kingfishers, woodpeckers, ducks, Canada geese, moorhens, bats, rabbits, deer, foxes, badgers and even the occasional visiting otter. There's also 4 adorable miniature horses on site plus a beautiful dinky donkey.
Suffolk Retreats is ideally situated to explore the best the county has to offer. Nearby Cavendish has plenty of antique shops, designer boutiques and traditional pubs. Neighbouring, Lavenham is one of the country's most beautifully preserved medieval villages. It's also equidistant from both the vibrant market town of Bury St Edmunds and cradle of academic excellence, Cambridge. All in all, it isn't hard to see why Suffolk Retreats was awarded the Gold Award by The English Tourism Board.
There's a well-stocked local shop just a few minutes walk from the site. The Suffolk Coast is brimming with plenty of places to visit, eat and drink. Both Bury St Edmunds and Cambridge are also just 40 mins away.
The CAMRA approved Rose & Crown (01440 786261) dates back to the 16th century and promises good food and fine ales. The Plough Inn (01440 786789) in Brockley Green has a sophisticated menu and does an amazing Sunday Roast. The Bell Hotel (01787 277741) in neighbouring Clare is a lovely historic setting to enjoy some pub grub favourites.
