Ready-to-go tipi camping on an unforgettable lakeside site

First-time campers? Rest of the family not completely convinced that camping in the notoriously rainy Lake District is such a great idea? Then 4 Winds Lakeland Tipis might just be the perfect pitch for your first under-canvas foray. It may not have some of the luxury extras afforded by other glamping sites – this is more back-to-nature tipi-ing – but the tipis are comfy, equipped and mean that you won’t have to struggle to put up a soggy tent in the rain. In fact, this multicoloured encampment will brighten up the dullest day.

The 12 brightly painted tipis form a colourful and eye-catching encampment in a corner of the National Trust’s lovely Low Wray campsite on the shore of Lake Windermere. They come with just about everything but the kitchen sink, including
a futon and air mats, rugs, cushions, gas cooker
and heater, crockery, cutlery, washing-up gear, a coolbox with a couple of freezer packs – you can bring more of your own and freeze them at the National Trust reception – and tea-light lanterns for illumination. (You may want to pack a torch and will need to bring your own bedding and towels.)

The shores of Lake Windermere are a short walk from the tipis; launch dinghies and canoes or just sit and admire the spectacular views. Depending on what time of year it is, you can enjoy walking through the woodland areas full of spring flowers, or go foraging for sloes and damsons.

Low Wray must surely be one of the most beautiful and diverse campsites in the country, with panoramic views over the surrounding fells, the lake’s shoreline to wander along and, for the kids, woods to hide in and large fields to run around. The main attraction for little ones here
is bound to be the unforgettable experience of camping in a real tipi - so don’t forget to pack your cowboys-and–indians costumes!

2015 is 4 WINDS LAKELAND TIPIS 10TH Anniversary. To celebrate we have a great SPECIAL OFFER for customers old and new. In Low Season our 4 person tipis will be just £169 for a 4 night midweek or a 3 night weekend, and our 5 person tipis will be just £179. Come and enjoy our wonderful tipis and have a magical 2015 holiday  It is now 10 years since we took our children Isabella Skye and Saffron Willow then aged 5 and 3 on a tipi holiday in Cornwall. We fell in love with the tipi tradition and decided we had to bring the experience to our home county of Cumbria. Setting up and running 4 Winds Lakeland Tipis has been an enjoyable and rewarding task involving many of our friends and family. We have often taken guidance from Native American teachings and looked to the earth for answers. Where the tipis should be sited? We needed to choose our locations wisely and take into consideration many aspects of the land we were going to use as our 4 Winds Tipi locations. Our main task is to offer an affordable and unique Lake District camping experience for families, small groups and couples.  operating from a National Trust campsite.  On our Journey with 4 Winds we are always learning and ask guests to comment on what aspects of the 4 Winds experience they liked and what they think could be changed for the better. We felt the need to do this as our first tipi holiday had been quite basic and we felt we needed just a few more comforts to be able to really enjoy the experience. We are proud to have had many great testimonials and press reports regarding the standard of our site and Tipis. Many thanks to all who have stayed with us. Below are just a couple of guests recommendations: “We have just returned home from a weekend in your fantastic teepee, it was wonderful and every moment was enjoyed by our little family... we even had some pets for the weekend that our son Archie (aged 4) named Mr Grayson and Mrs Quack who seemed to enjoy a seat by the fire and the constant free food! The teepee itself had everything required for a comfortable stay but we may have used a gas fire more than American Indians did!! We were also surprised that we didn't blow away in last nights wind and rain but woke up this morning in our sleeping bags still warm and dry and in the same place we went to sleep in. On the way down the drive as we waved bye bye to our little teepee we all agreed that we would be back soon.  Thanks again.” - Gav, Archie and Jules. May 2012. We had an amazing holiday and will be defo using your site again in the future and recommended you to a few mates with kids  Emma and family, Hoathwaite, August 2014 2014   I just wanted to let you know what a fantastic time we had staying in your tipis this week - we were all exhausted returning home yesterday but what an adventure it was in such a beautiful place. The boys loved every second staying in them , were on the go all week and loved playing with all the other children who were there too. We definitely want to return next year and will recommend to all our friends! Thank you so much Helen, Cath (Ewan and Archie), Low Wray, August 2014 Thank you, we all had a great time. Was a bit concerned when we arrived at the sign' this is a Quiet Site'  as Reuben was two years old and had just found his voice! Anyway the campers were still talking to us and said they didn't hear him at all. Lovely spot, an oasis of calm and you made us very welcome. Thanks eversoSandra and Stephen, Eva and Nuria, Lucas and Reuben, Low Wray August 2014 In partnership with the National Trust.
