Eco-friendly camping away from the crowds, with sweeping views and good access to National Trust-owned Farleton Fell

Despite the way that it stands out, with its screed top, tiered crags and looming form, most people motoring up the M6 drive straight past Farelton Knott on their way to the busier mountains of the Lake District. Little do they realise that, over the back of the limestone hill, there's the perfect campsite for walkers, with access straight on to the hillside and easterly views of the Yorkshire Dales. It's secluded, it's quiet and it's compassionately run, with a tree planted for every booking and eco-friendly facilities that fit the small-scale, homespun feel. It also has a very good name, which surely seals the deal.

Set on a working dairy and sheep farm, below both Farleton Knott (or Farleton Fell) and Hutton Roof Crags – both SSSIs for their wealth of unusual plants and animals – the campsite is still a busy place in its own agricultural way. Owners Dan and Pam may be off tending to sheep or dashing out on the school run, but they're always on hand for campers and, with only a handful of pithes available, there's rarely more than 15 or so people on the campsite at any one time to keep them occupied. One recent visitor excitedly recalled that Pam even made a cake for their partner’s birthday. That gives you a measure of the place and the warmth of the welcome here.

If camping ever becomes a little too close to nature for you, then the 'Cop Out Shed' gives you a chance to charge your phone and use the fridge, freezer or microwave – all powered from the farm’s own wind turbine. Or you can skip the camping altogether and go for one of their pre-pitched glamping options: Three furnished bell tents offer accommodation for those who prefer to travel light, two of which have their own private toilet and shower facilities and are tucked in a meadow slightly higher up the slope bordered by drystone walls.

The nature trail up Farleton Fell is the obvious first activity. From the top, panoramic views take in Morecambe Bay, the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales and the Howgill Fells, though it's also enjoyable looking much closer to home, at the plantlife and wildflowers in the nooks of the limestone slabs. And if you do eventually hop in the car, the coast, the Lakes and the Dales are all within easy reach, with the likes of Windermere a half-hour drive away and Kirkby Lonsdale 10 minutes or so down the road.
