Staggeringly spacious camping in a top notch location

Ashurst might just be one of the most picturesque campsites in England. Set in an enchanting woodland glade, surrounded by ancient oak trees, open grasslands, and free-roaming Shetland ponies, Ashurst offers some serious camping eye-candy. The phrase "location, location, location" certainly rings true here as this well run, family-friendly site is the perfect base to explore the countless walks and traffic-free cycling the New Forest has to offer.

Situated on the eastern side of the New Forest, Ashurst is run by Camping in the Forest, who manage several sites in some of the UK’s finest forests. Life here is wonderfully simple; there’s a relaxed, ‘pitch where you like’ approach so visitors have the choice of camping in the secluded forest, by the bushes, on the open grassland, or somewhere in-between. Facilities here are of a good standard too (with the addition of a recently refurbished shower block), however these can get busy over bank holiday weekends.

The local area is a walker’s paradise. Lasting a few hours, Matley Walk (under 5 miles) begins east of Lyndurst (the unofficial capital of the New Forest), and gives walkers a great tour around this unique and unspoiled environment. Passing ancient woodlands, open heathland, bogs and pine enclosures, you’re likely to encounter many forms of wildlife, in particular ponies, squirrels, rabbits and deer.

In case you needed any more persuading, the fact there’s several excellent pubs and restaurants nearby tops things off nicely. But of course, it’s the back-to-basics, woodland camping that sets this palace apart. And with that enchanting scenery and easy access to the glorious New Forest, Ashurst is a true camping gem – and thankfully not as costly.

Flushing toilets, showers, family shower room, washbasins, electric shaving sockets, chemical disposal point, laundry and drinking water taps.

Paultons Family Theme Park (02380 814442) is only a 15 minute drive away and has over 60 family rides and attractions, while  younger kids will particularly enjoy Peppa Pig World (023 8081 4442), the first dedicated Peppa Pig Theme Park in the world. Longdown Activity Farm (023 8029 2837) welcomes guests to bottle-feed the calves and goats, feed the ducks, meet the pigs and cuddle the baby rabbits, along with exploring the farmyard building's various play areas. If you fancy a round of golf whilst on your break, visit Brokenhurst Manor Golf Club (01590 623332), for a top course and stunning scenery.

The Happy Cheese (02380 293929) is a minutes walk from the campsite, and serves traditional home cooked food all day, and offers an extensive children's menu. Last but not least is The Forest Inn (02380 293071), a traditional pub serving home cooked food and housing an excellent range of real ales, lagers, ciders and wine.
