A simple, summer campsite in the grounds of a Kent school two miles from the coast

When the school bell tolls to signify the start of the summer holidays, it's no surprise that a huge cheer goes up. But it’s not just coming from students eager to escape their classrooms for six weeks of summer fun. There's also an excited sound from outside, where a merry band of campers are making their way onto the playing field. This is Sandwich Technology College in Kent. They’ve teamed up with entrepreneurial events organiser, Scott Doane, to bring campers to the Kent countryside via Popcorn Camping Sandwich. It’s a simple summer campsite with campfires allowed and facilities provided in the otherwise-empty sports hall.

It’s a neat idea that Scott has used elsewhere with great success. Now under the Popcorn Camping brand, he is opening sites in schools and on rugby pitches across the countryside. We may have slightly exaggerated the time between students leaving school and campers arriving – but not by much. Popcorn Camping Sandwich is a simple site with super-spacious (10m by 15m) park-on pitches and simple facilities. In the flat and well-maintained field, there’s a night-time loo but for everything else, you can wander the 200 metres to the sports hall. The advantage here is plentiful, modern facilities; flushing loos and hot showers in a properly indoor space.

Campfires are an important part of the Popcorn Camping experience and campers are just asked to protect the grass by keeping them in off-ground fire pits. You can hire one on site if you don’t have your own – and logs are for sale too. It all makes for an easy but fuss-free classic camping experience in a location that’s new to the camping scene.

From here, it’s just a mile into Sandwich, a historic town on the River Stour which was a major trading port in days of yore. Now the river has narrowed and it’s plied by smaller vessels, including the Sandwich River Bus which can whisk you to a nearby Roman fort at Richborough or out to sea and seals. The town itself is a sleepy, but rather well-heeled and charming place with lots of lovely medieval buildings to coo over. The closest beach is three miles away and accessed via a toll road between the area’s many famous golf courses. It sits south of Margate’s sandy beaches and north of Dover’s white cliffs. You might say it was Sandwiched between the two.

The campsite is a very spacious, flat and well cared for grass field. It normally serves the local school as their sports fields, but in the summer we take it over as the perfect place for a campsite. Toilets and showers are in the on-site sports centre, just 200 meters from the field. There is also a night-time loo right by the field, so you don't have to walk so far if you need to go in the night. 4 male showers and 4 female showers are available, as well as a disabled toilet. Showers are on the ground floor with no steps so wheelchair access is perfectly possible there too. Facilities are clean and modern. There is a washing up area close to the campsite, in a covered area with picnic tables which you are welcome to use. More picnic tables are on the field. Phones can be charged in  the sports centre. BBQs and firepits are allowed as long as they are off the ground, and we provide wooden boards to put under these free of charge (to protect the grass even more).
