Private, spacious, back-to-basics boutique camping in Oxfordshire with big views (plus a private toilet beside each pitch)

After a number of years running one of England’s most highly rated glamping sites on the doorstep of the Cotswolds, Lindsay and Alan returned to their true roots and, in 2016, swapped safari tents for bring-your-own family tents and gave their new farm campsite a name to match. There are no more pre-pitched frills and gimmicky thrills on the farm these days, just classic, back-to-basics camping with stonking great vistas of the unfolding land beyond.

In fact, what they’ve really crafted at Park Farm is a site that brings out the best of both worlds. A campsite it may be, but they’ve still taken a very boutiquey, individual approach to its creation, restricting the numbers to just eight pitches and providing each spot with its own private ‘en-pitch’ toilet. Nevertheless, there’s still a genuine feel of wild and simple authenticity about it all, with campfires crackling late into the evenings and a dawn chorus softly whistling you awake in the morning.

The car-free camping meadow itself is set on a 370-acre arable farm, nestled just on the edge of the picturesque Thames Valley village of Littleworth. The land here has been farmed by Lindsay’s folks for four generations and there’s a warm, beaming enthusiasm radiating from the whole family. It’s clear that both the farm and the campsite are a real labour of love. From their helpful, personal approach, you can see how proud Lindsay and Alan are to keep the family tradition alive, and the extra activities, such as Lindsay’s felt-making workshop, are a great way to bring visiting families together.

In recent the years the farm’s flock has diminished to just a handful of pet sheep and a small herd of dairy goats, plus a chicken coop where campers can collect eggs for their morning breakfast, fried over rekindled campfire flames. Peep from your tent at the right times, however, and you can also spy less expected critters – hares, buzzards, red kites or deer. Perhaps one of the finest features, however, ever present and ever changing through the year, is the campsite’s view. Each pitch boasts a spectacular vista stretching out from the Upper Thames Valley to the Cotswolds beyond. After enough time spent ogling, it eventually draws you out, either on foot or in the car. Head towards the historic market town of Faringdon or the Thames-at-Radcot, both within a leisurely half-day stroll. Alternatively, take to your wheels and wind your way to Oxford for days spent drifting along in a punt.

Facilities

Each of the 8 pitches has a private toilet with wash basin and cold running water, a standpipe for drinking water, a campfire pit (wood available to purchase) and picnic bench. There are no electrical hook-ups and car parking is in the farmyard to keep the meadow safe and traffic-free. Wheelbarrows are provided to transport your luggage. There are five showers (including two larger , family-sized cubicles) in a block with underfloor heating, a hair dryer, shaving points and one further toilet. There's an undercover washing up area and lockers available to hire for valuables with a powerpoint for charging small devices (bring your own padlock). A small honesty shop sells essentials and fire wood, with free to use freezer for ice packs and a communal fridge.

Suitable For

Tents only, great for families and couples. Strictly no caravans, motorhomes, campervans, dogs. No Hen/Stag parties and large groups unless booking the entire site in advance only. No walk-ins - pre-book in advance only.

Nearby

Viewing your surroundings is always a good way to start. Faringdon Folly Tower, a unique 100ft tower built by the eccentric Lord Berners in the 1930s, offers fantastic panoramas of the Thames Valley and, a mile or so further north, Radcot Bridge and Lock is a wonderful spot to stop for a picnic after. It's the oldest bridge across the Thames and was the scene of many battles, today, away from the lock itself, this area of the river is also particularly popular for wild swimming. To the south lies Uffington: home to the famous white horse; a hill figure carved into the chalk escarpment and thought to date back to 1000BC. For more farm fun, kids love Roves Farm (01793 763939) in nearby Sevenhampton, which has daily animal handling and feedings, as well as tractor rides and more. For something more exotic, spot rhinos, giraffes and zebras at Cotswold Wildlife Park (01993 823006), 25 minutes away.

Food & Drink

There's a wood-fired oven available to hire by the day, ideal for pizzas, baked potatoes or cooking joints of home grown Park Farm lamb (available to buy from the freezer in the honesty shop)! Tripods and cauldrons are also available to hire for campfire cooking. If you're venturing off-site, you don't need to stumble far – it's a 10 minute walk to The Snooty Mehmaan (01367 242260), a multi-award winning Indian restaurant, including 'Best Asian Restaurant in Oxfordshire'. For something more traditional, The Lamb at Buckland (01367 870484) – serving local brews and seasonal hearty pub fayre –  is a pleasant hour's stroll away (there's a bus that can drop you back). Faringdon town centre, meanwhile, is home to plenty of other eateries. A few doors down, the Faringdon Coffee House (01367 241574) has a handful of outdoor tables – grab a slice of cake and watch the world pass by. The Trout Inn (01367 870382) at Tadpole Bridge is a touch on the pricey side, but worth it for its location on the banks of the Thames with views across the Oxfordshire countryside.

Opening Times

April–October.

Family Friendly

Keeping to a tiny number of pitches has been a stroke of genius at Park Farm. There's so much space to play in and ample time to enjoy it. But between the North Downs and the Cotswolds, it's the landscape that does most of the hard work. The views are positively dreamy.

The Owner Says

The Real Campsite at Park Farm is proper, real tents only camping, how it should be: a small site with large spacious pitches, stunning panoramic views, campfires, your own private toilet on your pitch and no cars on site making it safe for children (and adults!) to run around, play and explore.

This is real camping but it isn't pitching your tent in a crowded field, 6inches from your neighbours, tripping over guy ropes on the midnight toilet trek. This is 'boutique' but it isn't a yurt or log cabin, with electricity, hot tub, and a glamourous price tag to match.

Our eight individual designated pitches boast stunning views across our 380 acre working arable farm and on over the Thames Valley to the Cotswold hills in the distance. Relax, walk, build dens, spot wildlife, collect eggs from our chickens, make friends with the pet goats – you might never want to leave the farm! But if you do there is lots to see and do: we are close to the Cotswolds, the dreaming spires of Oxford and we are just a few minutes drive from some of the best wild swimming spots on the Thames.

Social Distancing Measures

Our priority is keeping our customers safe during the COVID 19 outbreak. Our private 'en-pitch' toilets and individual pitches put us in a unique position of easily being able to implement social distancing on our site. Once we re-open we implement a raft of procedures to further enable this included increased cleaning, contactless check-in, staggered shower block usage, and only taking wood sales through pre-orders.
ANYONE FAILING TO ADHERE TO OUR SOCIAL DISTANCING MEASURES WILL BE ASKED TO LEAVE IMMEDIATELY WITHOUT REFUND.

COVID19 Refund Guarantee - if we have to close the site by government order over your stay we will give you a full refund (minus any Cool Camping booking fees). This only applies if we are forced to close and not if you decide to cancel for any other reason.
