Family-friendly glamping in Lotus Belle tents in the Cornish countryside between Truro, St Agnes and Falmouth

If you can’t choose between Cornwall’s rugged north coast and the softer, often sunnier south, why not plump for somewhere in the middle? Just past Truro, the county of Cornwall narrows before its forked end. Here, you can cross from St Agnes in the north to Falmouth in the south in half an hour. Travel the route between them and chances are you’ll happen upon the Hidden Field. Well, perhaps not quite as easy as that; this Lotus Belle tent camping site is, as the name suggests, rather hidden – and all the better for it.

You’ll find it tucked away up a gravelly byway that’s edged by traditional Cornish hedgerows. It’s a handy and surprisingly short five-minute drive from the A30 trunk road through the county, but unless you’re a camper or one of the residents of the few houses here, there’s no reason to venture this way. Beyond this quiet little lane, the area is not short on campsites but many of them are the type you can drive up to with your touring caravan. The Hidden Field, on the other hand, offers something different. Here, the accommodation looks less it’s been driven in and more like it’s landed on site. Pegs and guy ropes tether five bulbous, spacious, six-metre tents to the ground in a sheltered paddock that’s a little over two acres.

These are Lotus Belle tents. They may look like they’ve fallen from space, but in reality, their only connection is a window to it, a stargazer skylight in the roof that lets you see the stars from inside your canvas cocoon. The tent is set up with made-up beds: a double and two singles. There’s plenty of living and storage space for a family of four and further to all this, there’s a kitchen tent outside. A gas stove, fire pit, and barbecue are all provided. In fact, all you need to bring to this site is yourself, your towels, and your clothes. There’s even a shop on-site, manned by owner Andy, where you can stock up on supplies and pick up local tips.

It’s cosy, comfy, and quiet here in the Cornish countryside: a place to gaze at stars, watch rabbits nibbling the grass and listen to the animals on the surrounding smallholding. But rural life is just half the appeal; Porthtowan beach is a ten-minute drive from the site and so is lovely St Agnes. Head south and it’s about 20 minutes to Falmouth. There are two pubs within walking distance but a better bet is to drive four miles to the Miner’s Arms at Mithiam or for a seaside dinner at The Blue Bar in Porthtowan where you can rub (socially-distanced) shoulders with tourists and locals alike. If any of them ask where you’re staying, don’t expect them to know where it is. Although it’s not far from anywhere, it’s still a hidden field.

Fantastic set up - recommended!
We absolutely loved our first ever glamping experience and the ability to just turn up with towels and clothes was a revelation - no more squashing in the car! Andy was extremely welcoming and couldn’t do enough for us. We literally think he’d thought of everything. Very handy to have access to a fridge and freezer as well as the basics in his shop if you’ve forgotten anything. Great welcome pack even including chilled beer and G&Ts. The supplied board games and outdoor toys were a big hit with the kids and kept them entertained along with the other campsite children. Thank you so much for your hospitality. We will try to come back with the entire family next time!

We had a lovely time at Hidden field. Andy was extremely thoughtful, there were games in the field for the kids to play, such as badminton, swing ball and table tennis. The kids also loved the hammocks. The tent was beautiful, with very comfy beds. It was lovely to have our own shower and to be able to leave our wash things there. We would highly recommend the peaceful, friendly and welcoming experience we enjoyed. Thank you Andy we loved Hidden field, and are looking forward to coming back. 😊⛺🌞

We had the most fantastic experience glamping at Andy’s Hidden Fields! Andy has really thought of everything and the attention to detail is outstanding. The lotus tents were really big with lovely twinkling lights, beds & bedding were so comfy & it was lovely & quiet at night - we all caught up on so much sleep there! There was a gorgeous welcome pack, our own kitchen tent was so nice to have meals in & there were chairs, fire pit & bbq. What a nice touch too having your own loo, shower & locker. So much space & ideal having just a few families or couples at a time. A great selection of garden games for the kids too (footy, table tennis, boules, swingball, badminton, hula hoops, skipping rope & beanbag game) they loved making friends & playing on the hammocks! There was even a plentiful supply of battery packs, mega powerful torch for each tent & an honesty shop with everything you need! (And a hairdryer & plug!) Hidden Fields is also ideally & centrally situated - we were able to visit a wide range of places with gorgeous beaches close by. On our last eve Andy appeared with an ice bucket of bubbly & waitrose strawberries! What a magical place! We all can’t wait to come back again soon & it made our Cornwall visit all the more special for us and our two boys. Thank you Andy for creating an exceptional experience!

From the host
The Hidden Field is exactly that. A small, quiet place with peaceful surroundings. We are still close to all that Cornwall has to offer but hidden away down a country lane in a field with little light pollution and surrounded by nature. We have 5 Lotus Belle Tents at our small site. We also have well spaced huge 6 meter Lotus Belle star gazer tents. They are big and comfortably sleep 4 in one king sized bed and two singles. All bedding provided. There are extra blankets and various lights in each unit. There is a curtain in each unit to block out the stars and early morning sun. A table and stools and various other furnishings in each tent. If you have more than two children please contact us to discuss options for additional bedding. We have a modern shower and toilet block with a small onsite shop for essentials. Hot running water and proper toilets and showers! We have a wash up area with sinks and drainers. There is even an ice machine for your gin and tonics. You have a private fully equipped kitchen tent on each pitch with a gas hob, BBQ and cool box and ice packs that you can replenish from the shop freezer. Theres a charging battery in each unit for all your phone charging and power needs. No need to bring anything. All crockery and cutlery and pots and pans are in your unit. There is an overflow fridge in the shop if required. In the shop there is a coffee machine for early risers and soft drinks and other essentials for your stay. We sell logs and BBQ briquettes and fire lighters. We also provide a starter bucket in your kitchen tent to get you going. There is table tennis and various other games to keep the children busy. Hammocks and sun beds for the adults to relax. Feel free to bring: Extra blankets and torches.
Nearby attractions
The site is just five miles from Cornwall's only city, Truro, and about the same distance from St Agnes on the north Cornish coast with the nearest beach, sandy Porthtowan Beach. Falmouth, on the south coast, is 11 miles away – get out on the water there with Loe Beach Watersports (01872 300800) – and on either coast, you can enjoy walks on the South West Coast Path. A popular route is from St Agnes to National Trust-owned Chapel Forth where wildlife and heather sit on the cliff alongside historic buildings from the area's copper-mining past. There's plenty of mountain bike trails and cycling routes nearby including the Cornish Coast to Coast route. For animal lovers, Newquay Zoo (01637 873342) is 12 miles from the site, and for art lovers, head for Tate St Ives (01736 791177) 15 miles from the site. The Eden Project (01726 811972), Land's End, and the Minack Theatre (01736 810181) are all about 30 miles (a drive of 40 minutes to an hour) away.
Food and drink
Local produce is for sale from the site's little shop including eggs from the smallholding and meat from a local butcher for the barbecue. For more, head five miles to Truro where you'll find supermarkets alongside independent shops. There are two pubs within walking distance of the site, both about two miles away: The Red Lion in Blackwater (01872 560289) and The Chiverton Arms (01872 560240) but for a recommended meal or drink out, try The Miner's Arms (01872 552375), four miles away in Mithiam, the beachside Blue Bar in Porthtowan or The Thomas Daniell (01872 229994) in Truro. Water's edge Café Mylor (01326 377743) near Falmouth is recommended for breakfast or, if you're feeling hungry stay closer to the site (three miles) and head for Smokey Joes (01209 821810) for a fry up.
