Campfire-friendly, off-grid camping on Newton Abbot’s rugby pitch in South Devon

If you ask someone how to get to Popcorn Camping Newton Abbot they might tell you to turn right shortly after Home Bargains, Matalan and Next. They’re not the sort of directions we’re used to hearing on asking how to reach a Cool Camping campsite. But then; this isn’t your average campsite. It’s a pop-up site that’s set up on a rugby pitch for summer; making use of the flat field and facilities out of rugby season. And while the approach to site may be less than idyllic, the place itself is surprisingly peaceful, surrounded on three sides by trees. It’s located midway between Teignmouth Beach and Dartmoor National Park (less than six miles in either direction) and certainly useful for anyone looking for a back-to-basics base in South Devon.

We love the idea behind Popcorn Camping’s sites, which are popping up on rugby pitches and school playing fields in several spots across the countryside. They make use of well-maintained grass and facilities that otherwise stand empty in the summer. It’s a kind-of waste-not want-not approach to camping that’s increasing the number of pitches at a time when camping is more popular than ever. The philosophy on site is simple, laid back and relaxed. It’s tents only and dog-friendly with cars parked near (but not on) the spacious pitches (each 10m by 10m). Campfires are allowed in off-ground fire pits, there are Portaloos close by the camping field and better facilities (flushing loos and showers) in the clubhouse. On weekend afternoons and evenings the clubhouse bar is open for drinks – and there’s plenty of room to chuck a ball around.

There’s no getting away from the fact this is, first and foremost, a rugby pitch or that it’s in a fairly industrial setting. But while the back of a warehouse is visible on one side of the pitches, the other three are trees. A walk from site takes you to all manner of conveniences but it’s what’s beyond all that which draws most people in. It’s no secret that South Devon is a lovely place for camping holidays and this site, on the edge of Newton Abbot, is in a great place from which to explore all of it. The wild expanses of Dartmoor are great for walkers and cyclists, the attractions of Torquay and the wider Torbay area are as family-friendly as it comes and the beaches are, surely, tempting for all. None are more than 10 miles from this site.

We have 2 super large family shower units here, and one individual one. The family unit would normally be for a full rugby team of course - but in this case it will be for one family or one individual to use at a time. There are plenty of toilets available in the clubhouse, and extra portaloos out in the camping field too. Dish washing facilities are simple sinks, set up in the camping field. Campfires and BBQs are allowed as long as they are off the ground - we hire firepits for this if needed - and we provide grass protection boards to go under your firepit or BBQ for free, as it's important we don't harm the grass.

Suitable For

Tents only please. Dogs welcome - up to 2 per pitch, and always on a lead. Our campsite is focussed on families or small groups of adults - we do not allow more than 4 adults in one group unless they are also booking children in the pitches. Quiet time is from 10:30pm until 8am, and no music is allowed during that time.

The campsite is tucked behind a shopping estate, so a super market is less than 100 meters from the club entrance. There is also a pub and clothes outlets in very close proximity. The historic market town of Newton Abbot is only 1 mile away, so easily walkable. There are numerous pubs, restaurants and other shops in the town.

July and August only.

Our campsite is based in the grounds of Newton Abbot Rugby Football Club, in a field surrounded by trees and away from all traffic. It's a great location for exploring the Devon coastline and the lovely Dartmoor National Park.
