An array of glamping options in rural Dorset, set on a well established campsite

Life is all about decisions: Jam or marmalade? Shower or bath? Ant or Dec? In Cool Camping land, 'to glamp, or to camp' is the question we ruminate over. Thankfully, we know a place that takes the phrase 'spoilt for choice' to a whole new height.

No place typifies Dorset's pastoral essence more so than Blackmore Vale. The very heart of Hardy country, this lush landscape in the county's bucolic north, is a fabled patchwork of rolling green hills and rich, heather-carpeted escarpments. In short; the great outdoors with a capital G-R-E-A-T! And at just a couple of hours drive from London, it's the ideal destination of choice for world-weary urbanites who want to get away from it all.

Nestled within Blackmore Vale Campsite, Dorset Country Holidays takes this unspoilt pocket of the south-west and transforms it into a glamper's dream. For this long established (since '06) luxury camping operation provides a truly extensive choice of glamping accommodation and every one seems to top those that have gone before. Choose from bell tents, yurts, a country 'kabin' and an extra-large family bell for up to six, along with a strikingly modern-looking geodesic dome set on a flat wooden platform.

As one would expect of such a slick operation, the facilities at Blackmore Vale are first rate. Glampers are also offered a whole host of extras ('bed warming' anyone?) and every glamping unit has its own picnic table and campfire pit outside. Plus, of course, there's also the sheer appeal of the local area, be it wandering the narrow Hovis-advert streets of Shaftesbury or venturing on to Stonehenge and Salisbury. So whether you're looking to savour the delights of rural Dorset with the family or heading out in the car to uncover a little history, look no further than this glamptastic, well-run site in one of England’s most magnificent settings.

20 glamping units, two luxury shower blocks, two toilet blocks. All glamping accommodation has electrical sockets, electric cooler and electric lights, on site laundry, health club, massage treatment room, food vendors, fishing lake and shop. Hot tub hire.

Suitable For

Groups, couples, families, dogs – yes.

Three UNESCO World Heritage sites all within easy reach: Bath, Stonehenge and the Jurassic wonders of the Dorset & East Devon Coast. Longleat Safari & Adventure Park (01985 844400) promises a great day of animal antics for all ages. Recent, hefty investment has turned Bovington The Tank Museum (01929 405096) into a must-see, interactive attraction (albeit mostly one for the boys). Two of Dorset's most iconic sites, Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door, lie under an hour away – don't forget the camera!

Food & Drink

Delicious local food vendors visit the site on weekends during the high season. The Half Moon (01747 852456) is the pick of the local boozers, with a fine selection of local guest ales and a sharing menu for £20 offer for couples – share a starter and a pudding and a main meal each.
