Wilksworth Farm is more compact than most campsites, with excellent facilities and a safe environment that appeals to anyone looking to grant their kids some freedom during their annual holidays. Arrivals check in at reception, which doubles as a shop selling essentials, then either cart their tent across the road to the tent field or park their wheels on the upper level. A washing block with outside dishwashing sinks is on the edge of the tent field, opposite a communal games room. Try and aim for the opposite end to escape the clamour of guests using both. Tents are shoehorned around the perimeter, so another bit of advice is to pack a windbreak for privacy. Better still, take some friends with you and huddle up close together. The site’s selling points include the Olde Shed Café, where reasonably priced, generously portioned meals are served up in a sheltered, friendly ambience that older kids can enjoy with their friends. Up the hill and past a sea of caravans, there is an outdoor pool, which is heated and surrounded by sun loungers. Add tennis courts, a BMX track, sandpit, and dog-walking track and not only will you not have to plan any entertainment yourself, but you could even escape unnoticed to Bournemouth for a little retail therapy.

Bournemouth’s long sandy beaches and shopping centre are nearby, as are the unspoilt country walks of Cranborne Chase. Slightly further away, Monkey World (01929 462537) near Wareham is home to more than 200 primates.

Food and drink

The Stocks Inn (01202 882481) in Furzehill, with its original village stocks outside offers Dorset-farmed steaks, local coastal catches, and a pretty country beer garden.
