West Somerset, North Devon & Exmoor National Park – where three of the South-West's most breathtakingly scenic regions converge is where the camping cognescenti pitch up at one England's loveliest campsites. Streamcombe Farm lies on the fringes of the village of Dulverton, the southern gateway to the wilds of Exmoor. Beside one of the meandering River Brockley's tributaries, this charming corner helmed by the lovely Karen and Ian Jarmarkier is the quintessential rural idyll. With the runaway success of their B&B business, the Jarmarkier's decided to share their privileged patch with the camping community. And with acres of unspoilt wildflower meadows, fringed by ancient wild deer-inhabited woodland, it's little wonder that the campsite has continued the success story.
Camping here is a suitably back-to-basics affair. There's three fields to suit campers of all persuasions. Nearest the farmhouse, The Paddock will fit those used to creature comforts with its proper loos and hot-water shower tent. The Woodland Combe offers a cluster of neat, level pitches beside a babbling brook – get ready for some proper dam building. Fancy pitching up in privacy? The four acre Wild Flower Meadow is yours for exclusive hire. There's no cars allowed in this herbaceous haven and it's accessible over the stepping stones of the titular stream – how's that for secluded?! For those really wanting to get away from it all, the newly-restored Shepherd's Hut is perfect for camping couples. Complete with wood-burning stove, attractive rustic furniture and comfy double bed, this romantic retreat also comes with its own private wet-room in the adjacent stone barn. Guests also have sole use of the organic chemical toilet – a merciful 15 yards away.
Wherever you decide to set up camp, the quiet and tranquility of this place is all but assured. Cars and trailers are notable by their absence, as is the hum of electric hook-ups, and as for mobile signal...? Forget it. So save for the odd bleating sheep, nattering woodpecker, and, of course, that gently-flowing stream, you'll have nothing to listen to but your own sighs of contentment.
