A huge dose of true tranquillity
Far too many campsites claim to be the ultimate get-away-from-it-all experience when they’re not, whereas Holly Bush claims nothing of the sort, but it is. This two-acre site is hidden in the wooded folds of the unknown uplands of Somerset’s Blackdown Hills, along a maze of narrow lanes seemingly unreachable by man and machine, so few people seem to stray into this rolling rural idyll. And yet surely everyone has seen these hills from the madness of the M5 and vowed that ‘one day’ they’ll come and explore them? The most famous feature of the Blackdown Hills is the Wellington Monument, a memorial measuring over 50 metres, mounted on the highest point in the hills, and presently awaiting restoration. This elegant obelisk is now enclosed by corrugated iron sheeting painted by local schoolchildren, and is a brilliant example of modern art on the hoof. It would be worth a couple of days camping at Holly Bush just for the walk (or bike ride along the shady undulating lanes) to view this colossus of historical remembrance and young artistic endeavour, but that would be doing scant justice to the nature of this beautiful and glorious glimpse into an unhurried world. The Blackdown Hills are a place for quiet contemplation, long country walks, and long days in the (cycle) saddle. And Holly Bush is that fabled get-away-from-it-all campsite.
