Comfortable camping yurts in the countryside of the Welsh borderlands

After living abroad for over 20 years in Russia, France and the USA, Katrina and Steve Boydon came home to settle at TanyCoed farm. They fell in love with the farm on their first visit as they drove down the hill overlooking the property and took in the stunning views of the Shropshire and Powys hills. Sheep and cattle populate the patchwork of green fields surrounding the farm. The farmhouse itself dates from another era with its thick stone and redbrick walls. A plaque under the eaves indicates the house was built in 1902. Although, there was probably an earlier home on the plot as the stable block opposite dates from 1892. Red tile floors and creaking doors are all part of the package – it’s this olde-worlde charm that gives the farm its character. Mr and Mrs B knew immediately that this is where they wanted to put their glampsite.

Barnutopia, as the name might suggest, is a haven of peace and tranquillity for all who stay there. It isn’t just a business for Katrina and Steve but rather, a lifestyle choice that they have embraced happily. The yurts, stables, shepherd’s hut, bunkroom and guest facilities are an extension of their home, quite literally in some case. The shared and well-equipped camp kitchen is in an old tool-shed. The television lounge and party barn is in a converted cattle barn. In the main farmhouse itself, guests have 24hour access to a breakfast room, and a full bathroom. There are also two nice (clean, flushing) portable toilets for guest use. Guests who take advantage of the B&B service or purchase other meals from Barnutopia are served in the family dining room.

The three yurts and shepherd’s hut are found in a small open meadow right next to the farmhouse. Authentic Mongolian structures, the yurts feature beds, lamps, rugs and furnishings. There’s power for small electrical appliances and free Wi-Fi if you need to stay connected during your holiday. The transparent roof cap allows natural light to flood in silhouetting the ‘crown’ of the yurt. Each yurt is comfortable and practical with everything you need for a relaxing rural holiday without roughing it. The shepherd’s hut and stables are also fully furnished with all amenities. The bunkroom
is designed to be more like a hostel (where you book beds in a shared room) and guests bring their own sleeping bags for this unit. "‘Glamping’", Katrina and Steve tell us, doesn’t convey what they offer, "We prefer the term comfortable camping", they say.

With the practicalities taken care of, this home from home in the Shropshire countryside is an idyllic haven for adults seeking peace and relaxation and families who want their children to experience the outdoors. The atmosphere is wonderfully laid back and kids love exploring the outbuildings and meeting the horses, pigs, dog and cats (with donkeys and goats planned for the future).

The countryside beyond surrounding Barnutopia is perfect for walking, cycling and appreciating nature. Just down the lane is a large stream that children find irresistible, so make sure you bring wellies. By night campfires are welcome (or even encouraged) and there is a tall Dutch barn where guests can light a fire even when it’s raining.

If you fancy a stroll the village is under a mile away and has a pub, church and children’s playground. Or take a short drive into Oswestry, five miles away, one of the oldest market towns in England with a range of supermarkets, boutique shops, restaurants, an open-air market and other activities. The tallest single-drop waterfall in Britain is 10 miles away and the whole of north Wales, Shropshire, Cheshire, Powys and other border counties are within easy driving distance.
