Enchanting woodland campsite with some of the Scottish Borders' most stunning views

Dark Ruberslaw, that lifts his head sublime, / Rugged and hoary with the wrecks of time; / On his broad misty front the giant wears / The horrid furrows of ten thousand years.

So wrote 18th-century naturalist and native son John Leyden, born in nearby Denholm village, of the imposing summit from which this magnificent Scottish Borders campsite takes its name. Pitching your tent on the slopes of the hill can't help but stir the poetic faculties. The Bailey family's sprawling 500 acres of unspoilt Borders upland is the perfect setting for contemplative campers with a love of the rolling, enchanting landscape of the Cheviot hills and healthy, varied wildlife.

The beauty of this site is the sheer variety of tailored pitches to cater to the whims of all campers – from the intrepid pitch-your-own wild campers and remote safari tents, to the more sociable atmosphere of the Edwardian Walled Garden. With caravans turned away at the gate, Ruberslaw Wild Woods is a veritable canvas-connoiseur's paradise.

For campers, the Edwardian Walled Garden exudes an inclusive and welcoming atmosphere. Seek out your spot on the terraced pitches, and mingle freely in The Hub, a large barn with seating area centred on a huge fireplace where guests can eat, socialise or find shelter if it rains (not uncommon in this part of the world at times). It's a great place to socialise with fellow campers but should you want a bit of 'you time', head to the Edwardian glasshouse in the vinery with a book and relax beside the wood-fired stove. For something a bit more active, have a go at croquet, boules, volley ball or garden jenga on the recreational lawn.

The facilities are more than adequate and kept pristine, with free hot showers, underfloor heating for the cooler months, free Wi-Fi, a fully equipped kitchen, a small shop, and even a well considered boot-wash station.

If glamping attracts you, the safari tents hidden away in the woods are a must. Leave your car at The Hub and take only your food, toothbrush and a change of clothes – all the rest is provided. With a minimum separation of 300 metres between each pitch, you're unlikely to be kept awake by your neighbours.

One of the main draws to Ruberslaw is undoubtedly the surrounding wildlife. Keep your eyes peeled for red squirrels, owls, roe deer, foxes, elusive badgers and various birds of prey including buzzards, sparrow hawks, goshawks and perhaps even a honey buzzard. Then as you recline back at your chosen corner of this enchanting space, cooking up something delicious over the crackling flames of the fire bowls provided, you can see who won the game of animal i-spy in this most intriguing of Scottish regions.

Most tent sizes can be accommodated. The hillside pitches have a Thunderbox unit with water at the sink and a separate composting loo. Campfires are permitted on all pitches provided in the raised firebowls. A kit consisting of firebowl, logs, kindling and paper can be purchased from the reception for £6. Trolleys are provided for taking camping gear to the walled garden pitches. The Hub is a large under-cover seating area providing shelter for campers to gather. There are 4 clean showers with changing facilities and under-floor heating, separate male and female toilets with wash basins, and disabled and baby-changing facilities. The kitchen area comes fully-equipped with fridge, cooker, microwave, kettle, and 3 washing up sinks. Laundry facilities include a washing machine whirligig plus 2 boot washes. Safari Tents come fully equipped and feature: a double bed and bunk bed sleeping 2 (with duvets and all linen); a living area with dining table and chairs; a kitchen with all utensils; candle lighting, hurricane lamps and rechargeable electric lamps.

Suitable For

Tents, groups (at owner's discretion), DofE students and dogs (for a small charge and as long as they don't spook the hens!) – yes. Caravans, campervans & motorhomes – no.

The site is located at the foot of the famous Ruberslaw Hill – no visit to the region would complete without scaling it's breathtaking slopes. It also allows easy access to the Borders Abbeys Way – taking in Kelso, Jedburgh, Melrose and Dryburgh. The region also boasts several must-see castles and stately homes including Smailholm Tower, Floors Castle, Bowhill House and Abbotsford – the latter the onetime home of Sir Walter Scott.

Food & Drink

The neighbouring village of Denholm is 20-25 minutes walk over the hill (or 5 minutes drive for those in a hurry). Here you'll find two splendid pubs. The Fox and Hounds (01450 870247) dishes up some fine hearty pub grub while The Auld Cross Keys (01450 870305) has plenty of CAMRA-approved cask ales to enjoy on the large patio beer garden. There is also a coffee shop and an Italian style restaurant.

March - October. Please book in Advance.
