Isolated seclusion with speedy access to coastal walks. Larger shoals of dolphins have been gliding by recently, so get on a boat trip for an up-close-and-personal view.
Outer Bounds describes itself as a ‘small, traditional down-home rural retreat’. It’s a tiny site of six-plus plots among wild land peppered with indigenous willows, oaks, hawthorns and redcurrant bushes. Sheep roam the nearby fields and only one or two passing cars might slip along the road each day. Life really doesn’t get much more rural than this.

A boutique campsite this is not. There are sizeable pitches and a recently built shower block, but so far that’s your rugged lot, although there is now hot water all day during summer, and even electrical hook-ups on some pitches. There are campsite basics like a barbecue and communal table as well as less conventional features like (our favourite) a mini stone circle. Bring a guitar and some incense sticks and, on a starry night, you’ll be in hippy heaven.

There are people for whom this campsite won’t be right. Dog-owners are out of luck – pets aren’t allowed – and older children could get bored. Softies who can’t camp without hook-ups will find the amenities a little basic. But anyone looking for countryside calm, broken by nothing more than fish-and-chip suppers, trips to the beach and birdsong, won’t be disappointed.

Campfires allowed. 6-plus pitches offering plenty of privacy. 4 hook-ups. 2 showers, washing-up sink and washing machine. Logs and kindling. It’s a trek to the shops, so bring as many provisions as you can carry.

Six pitches spread far apart offer maximum privacy. Firewood logs £2.75 per bag; kindling 60 pence for a small bag; £1.75 for a large bag. Two electric hook-ups.

Suitable For

Tents and experienced, no-frills campers, small campervans - yes. Anyone else - no.

Llanrhystud, 4 miles away, is a pebbly, facility- free beach that’s great for sunsets. Holidaying with kids? The Fantasy Farm Park ranch is minutes away by car (Hafod Peris, Llanrhystud, SY23 5D; 01974 272285) and features animals, go-karts and pedalos. Nearby Cardigan Bay is famed for its dolphins, porpoises and seals, all of which may be seen along the coast – although you can up the odds of spotting them by taking a boat trip from New Quay.

Food & Drink

Off the tourist track, where the locals go, a friendly welcome at the Cross Inn is matched by excellent, innovative food and a lovely beer garden. There’s also the Y Talbot in Tregaron (01974 298208), which has occasional live music.

Opening Times

1st April–31st October, although advanced bookings may be accepted at other times.

Find the A487 at Llanrhystud, turn onto the B4337, this is main ‘T’ junction, signed for ‘Cross Inn’ travel up the hill approx 1 mile passing 2 left turns, for ‘Cwm Wyre’ and ‘Cwm Mabws’. As the top of the hill becomes visible, you see a turn to the left, with a modern bungalow on your right. Follow this road for approx 2 miles. You will arrive at a crossroads with a wood yard on your right. Follow this for another 1/4 mile through a disused farmyard (tarmac road), the campsite is on the left up the lane.
