Your own personal mountain bike trails

Beudy Banc is located in the heart of some of the world’s finest mountain biking country, but for owner Dafydd Tomos that wasn’t enough – so he went and commissioned trail builder Meirion Black (whose work can be seen at Coed-y-Brenin and Antur Stiniog) to build him his own personal single track downhill trail… And the ‘Gader Goch Descent’ can be yours too if you stay at Beudy Banc – a twisting, turning, beautifully bermed descent which plummets some 200 vertical metres down a verdant Welsh hillside where you’re far more likely to see red kites than other bikers (assuming you have time to look up). Along with the descent Dafydd has mapped out at least six different mountain biking loops in the surrounding countryside, along with some equally appealing road routes and walking trails. You can start all of them from one of the site’s three fully equipped bell tents (or pitch your own tent) or if you like a solid roof over your head after a day under the open sky there’s the option of a cabin or a converted barn too. It’s worth going for the camping option though since you’ll be pitched in a lovely open meadow beside a small stream and surrounded by woodland with inspiring views down the Dyfi Valley; and it’s worth making the effort to clamber up onto the rolling hills above Beudy Banc whether on foot or bike for the even better views west towards Aberdyfi and the Irish Sea, north to Cadair Idris and south and east across the wild and glorious heart of Wales.

Mountain biking is obviously the thing here whether on Beudy Banc’s own trails or the various trails around Machynlleth. There’s also great hill walking (Glyndŵr’s Way passes through the farm) and surfing and kite surfing on the coast at Aberdyfi. The Centre for Alternative Technology (01654 705950) is a short drive away and Machynlleth is worth a visit – market day is on Wednesday as it has been every year since 1291.

Food and drink

Take a trip back in time with a drink at the Dyfi Valley Hotel in Cemmaes Road – but note its only open Wed, Fri & Sat evenings from 8.30pm. For eating out the Wynnstay Hotel (01654 702941) in Machnynlleth is the best bet with an award winning restaurant, good real ales and a separate pizzeria.
