A rural idyll in the Preseli Hills with shepherd’s huts and spacious camping pitches, each with a private toilet

Cardigan Bay, St Bride’s or Barafundle Beach? Deciding which stretch of the beautiful Pembrokeshire coastline to head for can be a real headscratcher. But hang on a second; we’ve got another idea. Pick somewhere in the Preseli Hills and you’ll have all of them within daytripping distance. Not only that, but you’ll also get to experience Pembrokeshire’s other treasures: its ancient woodlands, neolithic standing stones and moorland hills. Choose Brynhaul Camping and Shepherd’s Huts, specifically, and you’ll also get an authentic Welsh experience that you’d be hard pushed to find on the coast.

Brynhaul is on the edge of Maenclochog village and looks across fields to the very highest point in the Preselis, Foel Cwm Cerwyn. If you struggle to find the campsite, just stop at the village café, shop or pub and ask for Elfrys and Steve. You’ll be pointed in the right direction before you’re bid a fond hwyl fawr. Welsh is the first language here and the people are proud; none more so than Elfrys and Steve whose enthusiasm for this land is infectious. They say that a lifetime in Pembrokeshire doesn’t stop you being regularly blown away by its beauty.

Staying at Brynhaul gives you a chance for that too. There are two shepherd’s huts and 13 spacious pitches. The huts offer everything that’s needed for comfortable cooking, eating and sleeping. They are insulated, cosy and open all year and a great place to stay for glampers, out-of-season campers or people adventuring by bike or on foot. All you need to bring is food and, if you’ve booked The Hedgerow Hut, your swimming kit as there’s a muscle-soothing hot tub too.

Over in the camping field, things are more back-to-basics but pitches do come with some practical bells on. Each has a campfire pit, a picnic table, its own compost loo and a tippy-tap sink (you’ll see). There are hot water showers and undercover washing-up sinks that are shared along with the best amenity; the field itself. It’s a hedgerowed, clover covered six acres with views to the hills. It’s bathed in sun when it shines and often blessed with the kind of sunset and stars that can make a camping trip. All this is just 500 yards from the edge of the national park, 15 minutes’ walk from the village, two miles from the top of the Preselis and 10 miles from the closest beach at Fishguard. It’s a rural idyll at the heart of Pembrokeshire, with Pembrokeshire at it’s heart.

Suitable For

Do you love nature? Do you love epic sunsets and star lit nights? Do you love peace, quiet and a slower pace of life? Then why are you waiting? Brynhaul Clover Fields Camping and Shepherds Huts is an ideal site for adventure minded couples and families, who want a great base to explore from. It's a safe site for kids to roam and explore and is a car free site (other than set up and take down, weather permitting).

An area in the centre of the field is ideal for playing games (you choose!)

Pembrokeshire is an outdoor instructors playground! We love that we get to walk, bike, canoe, kayak, sail, coasteer, stand up paddle board, surf, wind surf, rock climb, paint, photograph or just squiggle your toes in the sand. We have beaches listed in the top ten in the world, Britain's only coast national park (186 miles of crazy, stunning beauty). That's before we get on to Celtic historic sites that are 3,000 years old, hundreds of castles, churches and cathedrals that stretch from the Celts and Normans onward. Visit our local artists' Galleries and Mohair workshops. Then there are the pleasure parks and zoos like Heatherton, Manor Park, Folly Farm and Oakwood or Castell Henllys Celtic Fort - I think you get the picture, we are not bored here!

We also love the very pure light that comes from a vast expanse of ocean, so sunsets are worth waiting for, the air is worth breathing, the dark night skies are worth gazing at, the thorn trees in flower are amazing, both to look at and smell, as is the gorse and heather.

Food & Drink

Maenclochog (our village, just a 15 minute walk away) has Cafe y Sgar (that we nip off to when we can). The Globe is a great local, as is Tafarn Sinc in Rosebush is a community owned pub that does food. Not far away are the towns of Narberth and Newport (get the right Newport on your satnav!) which have great choices of food and drink. There are plenty of local brewers and breweries in the area including Gethin's cider (here in Maenclochog), Caffle or Bluestone Brewery in the spectacular glaciated Gwaun Valley. We have recently enjoyed the Trewern Arms in Nevern, Block and Barrel in Haverfordwest, the Cross Inn in Clarbeston Road and the Salutation Inn in Felindre Farchog , with great food in all of them.

Shepherd’s huts: All year.

Camping: Easter–October.

Getting There

From Carmarthen follow the A40 towards Fishguard for about 18 miles. Two miles beyond the village of Llandewi Velfrey, head onto the A478 signed for Cardigan. Continue for five miles through Clunderwen, Llandisilio and Efailwen until you come to a crossroads with a garage on the right and the Cross Inn pub on the left. Turn left and at the end of the road turn right. After passing Pont Hywel Mill, turn right. Follow this road for a couple of miles until you reach Brynhaul on your right.

Or - navigate to Maenclochog. Look for Cafe y Sgwar, take the road that goes between it and the Murco garage (sign posted Crymych) we are three quarters of a mile on the left.

Brynhaul is not far from Sustrans cycle route 47, which connects Newport to Fishgaurd, so arriving by bike is a great way to get here; whether as part of a cycle tour or after the train to one of the local stations. The closest are request stops at Clarbeston Road or Clynderwen (Clunderwen), both around seven miles from the campsite. The closest station with other onwards means is Haverfordwest or Fishguard. Buses to the village operate infrequently so a taxi would be best for the final 11–12 miles to Brynhaul Camping and Shepherds Huts.

Wonderful stay at a brilliant campsite!

A beautifully run campsite in an amazing setting. Facilities were the best we've come across… the picnic bench, fire-pit, and fridge/freezer space were all a real bonus, the showers were very good and having our own toilet felt like a luxury. Campsite is great, both, as a base for exploring the coast and the hills, or for simply relaxing, enjoying the tranquility and taking in the views from your pitch. The large open grass area in the middle of the site is ideal for families with children. Steve and Elfrys were perfect hosts and made us feel very welcome. Steve even shared his top tips for spotting adders with us!

A fantastic restorative retreat with so much to do nearby.

‘Thank you for a wonderful stay in the shepherds huts. We were so grateful for fine weather which made the week even more enjoyable. The huts are fantastic and we loved the detail and upcycling along with the obvious work that you had put into the design and making of them. The hot tubs were an added luxury as were the ensuite toilet and shower in each hut. The kitchens were well equipped and the outdoor seating and BBQ perfect to watch the sun set and stars! Your hospitality was great- from fast and helpful responses to e mails prior to our arrival and then being available during our stay to help with walking trail ideas and places to visit. A week wasn’t nearly enough time to explore the coastal path, beaches and hill walks. We left wanting more and will have to return. Our 19 and 22 year old sons said they really enjoyed the week too…that’s high praise indeed from somewhat discerning young adults who are ‘townies’ at heart ! They loved the walking especially and amazing views from the hills or coastal paths.’ Regards and thanks The Murphy Family
