An established campsite a mile-and-a-half from Newgale Sands, with campfires allowed and eco-friendly facilities

Like a crab's pincer, St Brides Bay opens its curved mouth towards the Atlantic and the waves that roll in make it one of the best surfing spots in the country. Amongst the beaches in the bay is Newgale, a vast sandy ribbon that any regular camper or surfer here will know well. And if close proximity to the beach is a top priority for you, then Rainbolts Hill Farm is likely to take your fancy. The place boasts eco-friendly facilities, sunset views over the bay and a convenient spot on the route of the main coastal shuttle-bus service, making it extremely handy for walkers. And it's less than five minute's drive from Newgale Sands.

So handy is the campsite's location that it's easy to get caught up in all the nearby things to do. The coasteering that Pembrkeshire is so famous for, for example, the 15-minute drive to St Davids or the 30-minute walk to Maidenhall Point at the southern end of the beach. But the campsite doesn't just rest on its laurels. They've really invested in the facilities here and they understand their campers. There's a brand new reception area with a small shop, phone-charging stations and WiFi and they cater to those with electric vehicles. A wind turbine, meanwhile, helps produce the power for the place, so they minimise their environmental impact, and, to support people arriving by public transport, they have a collection service from the train station if the bus timetable doesn't suit. Above all, the camping area itself is spacious and has good views, with a little shelter from the surrounding hedges and a dash of colour from the lavender that borders the entrance to the field.

From the back of the campsite you can access Folkeston Road, a quiet lane that leads down to lesser-known Nolton Haven Beach. From here you can pick up the Pembrokeshire coast path around Rickets Head to Newgale Sands or walk south to Druidston Haven. By car, of course, the whole Pembrokeshire coast really becomes your oyster and you can venture further around the bay to famed beaches like Solva and Whitesands Bay. At the end of the evening, there are plenty of pubs for good sundowners nearby but it's also thoroughly pleasant to retreat back to the site. Campfires are allowed and local ales are sold in the shop. Sit back and take in the view from your pitch of the St Brides Bay pincer and the Atlantic beyond.

Nearby

Watersports on your Welsh wishlist? Bring your surfboard to Newgale beach to join the regulars, or hire kit if you’re travelling light. Those who haven’t quite mastered the art yet can sign up for surf and kitesurfing lessons here, or join sea kayaking, paddleboarding or coasteering tours.

If you're after something a little more leisurely, the family-friendly sands of Broad Haven beach are about 15 minutes’ drive away, or you could don your boots for a ramble along the Pembrokeshire Coast Path. Pony rides, lessons and beach or country canters are all on the menu at the local riding stables, 10 minutes away.

St Davids, 20 minutes away, is worth a jaunt too: the UK’s smallest city is famed for its cathedral and independent shops, and it’s also the meeting point for boat trips to spot wildlife around Skomer and Ramsey islands (bring the binoculars and keep the peepers peeled for puffins and dolphins).

Food & Drink

The nearby village of Roch is only a quick walk away and has a village shop and friendly pub which serves evening meals and brews its own beer. There are also a couple of lovely lunch spot cafes at Newgale Beach, just 1 mile from the campsite. If you need more than that, the handsome county town of Haverfordwest is only 15 minutes away by car. Here you’ll find larger supermarkets and shopping centres where you can stock up on necessities.

The Owner Says

Surfing, hiking, horse riding, coasteering, wildlife spotting… if it’s fresh-air frolics you’re after, the Pembrokeshire coast is a pretty fab pick. And if sea-view sunsets would top that all off nicely, you’ll settle in well at Rainbolts Hill Farm.

From this family-run four-acre site there are stunning views out over St Brides Bay, best taken in at the end of the day as the sun dips below the horizon… Naturally, that’s a fab time to crack open a beer and sizzle a few sausages too; barbies are welcome here and there's a farm shop on site selling top-notch local food and craft beers. For more supplies, decent-sized supermarkets are 10 minutes' drive away in Haverfordwest. Welsh weather not all that warm? Cosy up at the cracking country pub 15 minutes' stroll away.

Having seen the sea from the site, you’ll no doubt want to take a closer look, and this is a fine location to do so. A 20-minute ramble will take you to the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, and the beaches of Newgale, Nolton Haven and Broad Haven are all under 15 minutes away by car. Turn and face inland and you’ll be looking at the Preseli Hills, also a fine place for a scenic hike.

However you’ve spent your day, back at base you’ll be staying at a peaceful place (no parties, please) with heaps of space to chill out, as well as top-notch heated bathroom blocks (ladies' and gents', with toilets and showers) to keep everyone spruced up.
