Camping next to one of Pembrokeshire’s best surfing beaches

About halfway along the stretch of road from Haverfordwest (Hwlffordd) to St David's, the road takes a steep dive down to the coast, to the stunning beach that is Newgale (Niwgwl). Surfers, kayakers, windsurfers and kite-surfers dot the bright water, while families spread out on the sand. And the campsite where many of these people hang out is in a large field, 30 seconds across the road. With such a proximity, the location is pure heaven on a hot sunny day. The campsite itself is basic - a largely flat, virtually treeless field. A low bank separates it from the adjoining A487. But there’s a great surfer vibe in the evenings – and if you don’t have any of the kit and fancy a go, you can hire everything you need from the Newsurf Beach Shop next to the site. And when the weather’s fine and you can see the sea shimmering from your pitch, it’s that proximity to the golden delights of the beautiful Pembrokeshire Coast that sees people coming back for more, year after year.

BBQ’s allowed, but not campfires. The facilities block has 10 toilets and 8 hot showers (50p token), with cold showers for wetsuits behind it; the dishwashing room is open 8am–8pm; no laundry facilities; the Newsurf Beach Shop (01437 721398) next door sells essentials.

Suitable For

Tents, campervans, groups – yes. Caravans, young groups, dogs – no.

4 miles north is the harbour village of Solva with it's pubs and restaurants. There's even more in St David’s with the cathedral, visitors centre and galleries. Go horse-riding on the beach with Nolton Stables (01437 710360).

Food & Drink

The Duke Of Edinburgh (01437 720586) pub is right next-door; nothing special but has a popular outside terrace. For a friendly bar with views and good home cooked food the quirky Druidston Arms (01437 781221) is worth the drive along the coast. All the food you need in St David’s.

March – end of September.
