Family-friendly bell tent glamping with wood burners and campfires, within walking distance of Felbrigg Hall

A beach, a steam train, a big country house, an old flint church… ask anyone to list the holiday sights of North Norfolk and, chances are, they’ll mention everything within two miles of Gresham Hall Glamping. The new bell tent location, tucked away in the village of Aylmerton, over the hedge from the village pond, has a seriously convenient location. It somehow manages the feat of being five minutes drive from the beach and five minutes walk from the National Trust’s Felbrigg Hall, yet still eschews the holiday crowds. It’s also remarkably comfortable, which surely seals the deal.

There are just seven bell tents in the meadow, each comfortably sleeping a family of four, with grown-ups in a proper double bed and room for children on air mattresses to the side. Almost everything you need is provided. There’s a box of crockery, cutlery, and utensils, and a picnic table and firepit outside. Heating comes in the form of a toasty wood-burning stove, which adds a lovely atmosphere on cooler evenings, and there’s also an electric blanket for the double bed.

As cosy as each bell tent seems, you’ll likely spend more time outside. There’s ample space to play in the meadow, with views of the round-towered church in the background and the hot showers and loos at one end of the field. A track, a matter of yards from the meadow entrance, traces the short walk to the Felbrigg Estate, a fabulous place for family picnics overlooking the sheep- and cattle-dotted parkland, and the local roads are quiet enough for cycling – head south through Gresham past the church and the hall from which the glampsite takes its name. If it weren’t for the steep hill back up we’d suggest cycling the 10 minutes to the beach in West Runton too (more like 20 minutes on the way back), with sands that run to Sheringham in the east and Cromer in the west, just a small taste of the miles of coastline within easy reach.

Nearby

We are in the middle of the countryside, surrounded by lots of beautiful walks, some fabulous beaches and many interesting National Trust properties.

Our favourite National Trust areas are the beautiful hidden gem Felbrigg Hall (0.5 miles, a gentle walk) with it's interesting house and gardens with plenty of glorious parkland to explore. Sheringham Park (3.4 miles) which recently featured in Country Life has walking trails through glorious woods with opulent rhododendrons and spectacular sea views. Blickling Park (10 miles) is believed to be the birthplace of Anne Boleyn. There is plenty of be explored in the stunning Jacobean house and extensive gardens with walking trails around the lake and through the woods. Booking is advised over the summer.

Conde Nast Traveller has named 5 of our local beaches on it's list of the best beaches in the UK; Cromer, Sheringham, Brancaster, Hunstanton and the "lunar-like" Holkham. The latter has one of the most unspoilt and beautiful stretches of sand in the country, sheltered by a pine forest, it is popular with families, walkers, horse-riders, kite fliers and even paid visit by film crews and the Household Cavalry.  Other local beaches we love are East and West Runton (within walking distance for those who like a little adventure) where stretches of sand lead into rock pools, perfect for children paddling; Cley-next-the-Sea, a lovely walk across the marshes with views of plentiful birdlife and the distinctive windmill to the shingle beach; Wells-next-the-Sea, a 'bucket and shape beach' with charming beach huts (book in advance) leading in to Holkham Beach.

Other attractions include the North Norfolk Railway which goes between Sheringham, Weybourne and Holt, a brilliant way to explore the beautiful coastal area. Holt Country Park with it's wild ponies, Amazona Zoo in Cromer with it's PYO strawberries, the Norfolk Broads, seal trips from Morston, Stiffkey saltmarshes and the famous deep history coast where the wold's biggest mammoth skeleton remains were found at West Runton (3 miles).

Food & Drink

The nearest pub is the Roman Camp Inn 0.5 miles away. There are plenty of places to eat in Cromer (3 miles), Sheringham (4 miles) and Holt (8 miles) as well as a selection of fantastic restaurants and pubs in the surrounding area.  Our favourites include The Gunton Arms, The Bucks Arm at Blickling, The Saracens Head at Wolterton, The Walpole Arms at Itteringham, Byfords in Holt and The Pigs at Edgefield.
Closer to the coast are The Wiveton Cafe, The Wiveton Bell, The Red Lion at Stiffkey, The Dun Cow at Salthouse, The George and Dragon at Cley, The Anchor at Morston, Morston Hall (Michelin Starred).
You could sample some of our great fish and chips shops: Will's Plaice, No1 Cromer, Eric's Fish and Chips or French's Fish Shop.
