A welcoming, well-run operation that offers hassle-free glamping in the most serene of surroundings

Ever fancied a Mega Pod glamping break in Suffolk? Picture a woodland of olive-green, riddled with paths and cycle trails; a rural English county of gentle hills and delightful villages; and finally, one of the UK's most significant archaeological sites just down the country lane. This, deep in the heart of charming Suffolk, is West Stow Pods – a welcoming, well-run operation that offers hassle-free glamping in the most serene of surroundings.

The site, in total, has just 4 distinctive mega-pods, each surprisingly roomy, sleeping a family of four comfortably (a couple on the double bed and two on a fold-out sofa). The immaculately maintained wet room gets top marks for design, and comes kitted out with a private shower and WC – perfect for those not fancying the morning trudge to the shower block! Not finished there, you’ll also find a well-stocked kitchenette, complete with fridge, oven, microwave, tea making facilities and toaster.

By the car park, the pods are also accompanied by a wooden cabin, particularly popular with couples and small families. Originally the campsite reception, the cabin was lovingly converted in 2016 to keep up with the growing demand for accommodation on the site – led, in part, by frequently returning campers. There are two bedrooms inside, one room with a double bed, the other with a small, single pull-out beneath. Outside, the mobile BBQ allows you to slope off into the trees if you fancy frazzling your sausages in a more densely wooded setting.

A combination of sea, sky and woodland vistas can make Suffolk a beautiful place to visit. You may have to pinch yourself to remember that this rural, some might say sleepy county once operated a string of thriving ports. Today, the Stour Valley impresses with its pretty villages, filled with fancy churches and timber-framed houses. Nearby Bury St Edmunds (6 miles) is also worth a visit with its compelling past and spirited present, all visible in the varied architecture and pleasant shop-dotted streets.

With heating, lighting and electrical points all present and correct at West Stow, the snug pods keep nice and toasty on a chilly winter evening. But when the weather's playing ball, guests have the luxury of their own outdoor deck, complete with table, chairs and a barbecue – ideal for a spot of al fresco dining. But no matter how ingeniously designed or comfortable these pods may be, they could never compare to its untouched, woodland surroundings.
