Huts with woodland views and a provided bed 'n' breakfast from artisan cheesemakers

Teesdale Cheesemakers’ glamping presents cosy, off-grid shepherd’s huts with the perks of a bed ‘n’ breakfast, marrying the privacy and tranquility of rural glamping with the top-notch food of its titular cheesemakers and site hosts, Allison and Jonathan. The artisan cheesemaking couple lead a sustainable lifestyle by way of their smallholding, with them opening the gates to their 20 acres of land to couples who want to experience this peaceful slice of countryside life.

The two shepherd’s huts are tucked away over a secluded hill, presenting eco-friendly accommodation that doesn’t compromise on comfort. Simple, clean, and modern, wake up to fantastic views over the woodland and go to sleep in natural and organic bed linen. Both huts boast higher ceilings than traditional shepherd’s huts, giving you more vertical space than your average hut — taller folks will be pleased with the extra headroom! Amenities are basic but provide everything you need, from a hot shower through to a flushing toilet and tea- and coffee-making facilities.

While no cooking is allowed inside the huts, guests can hire a firepit from the site or bring a disposable barbecue to cook while admiring their natural surroundings or, in what should be their first port of call, visit Cafe Cheesedale for their included breakfast or another delicious treat from their menu. Although it’s a necessity for you to try the cheese here given Allison and Jonathan’s area of expertise, the menu offers plenty more taken directly from the site and nearby suppliers, from the rare-breed pork in its burgers to the locally roasted coffee. And, of course, you mustn’t forget to tuck into a cheese platter, consisting of the Teesdale Cheesemakers’ own creations along with local chutney, butter, and award-winning Peter’s Yard crispbreads.

Given that this is a couples-only site (though you can bring your dog, too, for an extra charge), the site is located within picturesque surroundings ideally suited to a romantic retreat. Venture into its two acres of woodland for a scenic stroll, take a picnic down to the river Gaunless that runs through the site, or simply chill out on your veranda and look out onto uninterrupted greenery. If that's too much relaxation for you, the bustling Bishop Auckland is only a drive away, as is the market town of Barnard Castle, and the iconic Kynren outdoor show that revisits British history in spectacular fashion.

Our glamping huts are a shepherds hut with the curve of an agricultural building, so they have a higher ceiling than a traditional shepherds hut.

The glamping huts are off-grid so amenities are limited but we do offer en-suite facilities, a phone charging point, tea and coffee making facilities and a small cool box fridge.

Bed linen and towels are provided.  The pillows and duvets are supplied by Urban Wool.  They are chemical-free, organic wool which are naturally hypoallergenic.  Wool fibre is naturally resistant to dust mites, dust mite allergens and fungus.  The perfect start for a relaxing stress free night.

The glamping experience is a bed and breakfast offer only.  No cooking is permitted in the huts please.

Our breakfast sausage and bacon is from our own rare breed pigs reared here on the farm, along with eggs from our chickens and local bread.  It you opt for a more continental cheese breakfast all the cheese is made here on site using milk from the family farm 6 miles away and is served with local bread, chutneys and butter.

We even have locally roasted coffee and we think it's fantastic!
