Modern pod glamping with hot tubs in a quiet Buckinghamshire meadow

Just beyond the northern tip of the Chilterns, a natural ridge that runs like a backbone across the heart of the home counties, Wingbury Farm Glamping occupies an almost perfectly flat field in rural Buckinghamshire. When the sun rises from beyond the chalk hills, the long shadows of the nearby trees stretch their fingers across the meadow to where a trio of glamping pods reside, each sleeping up to four people.

Inside, Wingbury’s pods are a thoroughly modern glamping scene. There’s not a sleeping bag in sight, with comfortable sofas that seamlessly slide down to form proper double and twin single beds and a fully equipped kitchen that features a fan oven, sink with running water, fridge-freezer, kettle and electric hobs. This is a glamping world that has left the days of leaky tent camping far behind. There’s thermostatically-controlled heating, free Wi-FI and each of the pods has en suite toilet and shower facilities, with a powerful shower and toiletries provided. The bright, light finish of the interior, too, gives it all a sleek new feel.

Along with the pods, the camping field is also dotted with picnic tables, brick barbecues and a number of young oak trees, conscientiously planted in 2016 to help break up the meadow and add some extra greenery. Each of the pods, meanwhile, is also paired with it's own Scandinavian-style, wood-fired hot tub for those who really desire the utmost luxury.

Rise early enough and you may glimpse a fox slinking across the adjacent fields or a herd of deer making their way along the hedgerow, camouflaged amongst the shades of brown. The local gamekeeper rears partridges and pheasants just 500 metres from the glamping site and the area has a real array of birdlife – red kites have even been known to roost in the trees at the far end of the meadow. If you really want to see some animals though, you can’t beat the half hour drive to Whipsnade Zoo, one of the main family attractions in the region. It covers a full 600 acres of chalk down land and backs onto Ivinghoe Beacon, an excellent viewing point from which to survey the Chilterns and the flatter landscape stretching north into Bedfordshire. Hang around for long enough and you'll find it's the perfect spot to enjoy the sunset. That's if you're not already back in the hot tub!

Oak Pod
Me and my partner booked a weekend away and we stayed in the Oak pod. We had amazing views and enjoyed watching the sunset from the hot tub, which stayed warm for ages. We also made the most of the fire pit with some marshmallows that was offered which was lovely. The location was stunning and was so peaceful being further out in the country side, but we still had shops and restaurants locally also. Would highly recommend and we will defo be coming back in the new year.

Me and my partner booked this to take some time away and switch off. The cabin was amazing, it was spacious and clean. We spent the morning having breakfast and playing cards and had amazing views over the farm fields. The hot tub was an amazing addition and easy to keep hot with the log burner. Would highly recommend and looking to rebook asap!

Oak Pod
Four of us stayed for 2 nights for our daughter’s birthday midweek. The pods were perfect and hot tub was amazing. Great views across the fields, excellent facilities with tea and coffee etc provided. All we had to bring was bedding, our 1st time ‘glamping’ and was a lot less stressful than having to pack for camping!! Definitely on our go back to list.

From the host
Situated on the edge of a family-run farm, our three luxury en-suite pods look out on breathtaking views by day and catch the full beauty of the fiery sunset in the evening. The well-insulated pods sleep four and are equipped with a seated dining area, which converts into a comfortable double bed. The sofas in the seating area convert into two further single beds. As well as your well-equipped en-suite bathroom, the pods have a fully fitted kitchen with fridge freezer, electric hob and electric fan oven. Outside, you’ll find a large decked area with seating, your own brick BBQ and steel fire pit and, of course, those incredible views. For a little extra luxury all pods now come with a Scandinavian wood-fired hot tubs, which take four people each. Ideal for a romantic evening of unwinding while you watch the sun go down.

Whipsnade Zoo (0344 225 1826) is 30 minutes away by car, situated on the northern edge of the Chiltern Hills which spread away to the south. It makes this glamping site an enviable spot for walking with a footpath running along the top fence if you fancy on striding out straight from your pod. If not, drive a little south to enjoy The Ridge Way, a long distance route which runs the full length of the Chilterns. It's 25 minutes to The National Trust's Waddesdon Manor (01296 820414), a magnificent house and grounds in the style of a 16th-century French château, while families will prefer Mead Open Farm (01525 852954), where children can enjoy hands-on lambing time in spring and animal handling in summer.
Food and drink
All guests receive a welcome pack on arrival with milk, orange juice, tea, coffee. It's a 15-minute walk to the nearest pub, The Rose & Crown (01296 708414) in Wingrave, which is just over a mile by road but less if you follow the local footpaths. There are a further 4 pubs all within 2½ miles of the campsite. The 16th-century, half-thatched Royal Oak (01296 681262) in Aston Abbotts, The Queen's Head (01296 688268) in Wing, The Cock Inn (01296 752210) just a little further up the same high street and The Stag (01296 660602) in Mentmore.
