These super-sized, double-decker yurts on a charming East Sussex farm take glamping to another level.

There are yurts and then there are Graywood Canvas Cottages. Set between the East Sussex High Weald and the South Downs National Park, this brand new glamping site near the charming village of East Hoathly takes yurt camping to another level – quite literally.

So taken with the mammoth luxury yurts she stayed in during an impromptu glamping excursion in Yosemite National Park over a decade over, hostess Stephanie envisioned these super-sized creations on her idyllic farm one day. And now, 15 years later, she’s sharing her slice of glamping West Coast style on the South Coast of England.

Proving the old adage true that our cousins over the pond really do make everything bigger, the three titular canvas cottages are spread over two floors –arguably the only mezzanine model yurts of their kind available to UK glampers. To call them yurts almost feels like a disservice, but these double-decker canvas cottages – crafted and imported direct from Seattle – boast full-size french doors and huge picture windows offering widescreen views that allow the light to pour in. The intricate lattice walls, rafters and a staircase made of douglas fir demonstrates the quality of the craftsmanship, while the stargazing crown means guests can enjoy a celestial show, safe in the snugness of their cosy abode.

With both a ground-floor bedroom with super-king Hypnos bed and a galleried first-floor bedroom with three single Hypnos mattresses (or a double and a single), the yurts can comfortably accommodate up to five guests. There is a separate sitting room with comfy custom-made sofas, a dining table and chairs for six, and everything else you could possibly need to make you feel right at home – electric heaters and a flame-effect fire, a television and DVD player and books and board games for rainy days.

An integrated kitchenette includes a microwave, oven and hob, a toaster and a kettle and there’s even appliances like a washer/drier, fridge/freezer and dishwasher should you need them. Towels, duvets, and all bed linens is provided along with cutlery and crockery. Facilities-wise, there’s a proper bathroom with flushing toilet, hot water shower, and underfloor heating, while thoughtful touches like complimentary toiletries add to the hassle-free nature of a stay here. And when the sun’s read the script, guests should make full use of the outside furniture beside the firepit and barbecue – oh, and did we mention each yurt boasts its own private hot tub too?

Despite the obvious luxuries onsite and the scenic setting, the wonder of Sussex and the south coast await. East Hoathly is a charming country village with a couple of cracking little pubs and post-pint walks to enjoy, while historic Rye, boho Brighton and the sprawling South Downs are all within easy reach.

Put the glamour in 'glamping'
Beautifully presented, the welcome basket added an extra special touch. We had the best week here my daughters (9&7) loved sleeping under the stars on the mezzanine level. There's lots to explore near by and the hottub at the end of the day was perfect. Lots of space to play inside and outside, with games & dvds too.

Luxury glamping in beautiful yurts
We had the most amazing time. The yurts are crafted to an exceptional standard, the beds are super comfy, silent surroundings and the hot tub is the icing on the cake. We didn't leave the site as everything we needed was there. 10/10 and already planning a return visit. A perfect weekend was enjoyed by all. Thank you x

Graywood Canvas Cottages
Relaxing and luxurious yurt stay
We loved staying in the yurt which was so well equipped and luxurious. The space around the yurt is huge so you have lots of privacy and it was lovely and quiet. We really relaxed feeling like we were in the heart of the countryside. We cannot wait to book again and were planning our next visit before the first one had ended!

Home from the most wonderful weekend staying in Ash Yurt - this is my kind of glamping! Everything had been thought of with lovely little touches, welcome pack was just perfect along with milk and fresh orange in the fridge. We made good use of the hot tub which was the icing on the cake, also a good range of games & dvds to watch so we enjoyed family film night too. Just didn’t quite have enough time to enjoy the area as much as we’d like but would be keen to stay again and explore this beautiful area more.

From the host
Graywood Farm is a small, family run, working farm. Over the last decade we have farmed Charolais cattle and Southdown sheep. Currently we have sheep grazing across the land. As with many farms now, we also have diversified with several small businesses being based onsite. It is highly likely that there will be sheep in field a short way from the yurts and you may be able to see them from your window. We offer 2 or 3 night weekends (only 3 when it is a bank holiday), 4 night mid week and 7 night breaks or any combination. If you would like to book 7 nights please visit www.graywoodcanvascottages.co.uk to book and receive a discount.
Nearby attractions

East Hoathly village is 3km away and has a shop and post office, a hairdressers, a café and a pub, which also does takeaway.

There is a park with a children's playground and the village cricket team can be found playing there on a Sunday afternoon. Slightly further afield, Blackberry Farm offers animals and play experiences, Bentley Wildfowl and Motor Museum (01825 840573) is a multi-faceted family attraction, just 10 minutes away by car.  Michelham Priory - an Augustine Priory, said to be one of the most haunted places in Sussex is also about 15 minutes away. Sheffield Park, north of Uckfield, is a magnificent National Trust garden, from where steam trains run to East Grinstead on the Bluebell Railway (01825 720800). If it's raining, you might consider a trip to the Jacobean mansion of Rudyard Kipling, Bateman's, in nearby Burwash. If you would like to venture a little further Brighton is just under 45 minutes away although you may wish to catch the train from nearby Polegate or Lewes as parking is expensive!  It does give you an opportunity to go over the viaduct too.  Lewes is the county town on a river just 20 minutes away where there is a castle, Anne of Cleaves house, Harvey's brewery and many antique shops and eateries.

Food and drink
The local pub is The KIng's Head (01825 840238) in East Hoathly. This historic CAMRA-approved watering hole (dating back to 1648) boasts a fine selection of ales (courtesy of the brewery next door) and a decent menu of pub grub favourites which can also be collected as a takeaway. The Star Inn at Waldron (01435 812495) is another antiquated gem of a pub with a beautiful beer garden to boot. Not to be confused, The Star Inn (01435 863570) in Old Heathfield is well worth a visit too, as is The Black Duck (01435 830636) in Warbelton.  The Offham Farm Shop (01273 478265) does great meat for BBQs.
