Well-equipped bell tent accommodation with a new location for 2021 in a quiet corner of a New Forest farm

People have been living in Godshill in the New Forest since prehistoric times. And many of them in tents too. There was an iron-age camp here, the headquarters of an early Scouting-like movement called ‘the Order of Woodcraft Chivalry’ and, in the early 19th century, there was even a very particular holly tree where roaming gypsies used to gather. Things have rather moved on today and, while nomadic campers will still find campsites in which to pitch, Godshill is also home to more 21st-century comforts in the form of Arniss Bell Tents – a sight for sore eyes if you don’t fancy pitching a tent of your own.

Set in a quiet paddock behind a farmhouse, Arniss Bell Tents comprises a collection of just six pre-pitched abodes, each with a campfire pit, a picnic table and some round-the-fire timber seating. Inside, expect that classic camping splash of bunting, fairy lights and lanterns, as well as a host of glamping comforts that include a compact kitchen cabinet with all the basics you need to get cooking and a much appreciated welcome pack (think tea, coffee, milk and a few other surprises). Outside, meanwhile, glampers have showers and portable loos a short stroll away, plus use of a 'proper' loo in the farm court yard. There's also a marquee kitchen with hot water and a dishwashing sink and fridge/freezer, with extra sockets for mobile phone charging.

On the western edge of the New Forest, Arniss Bell Tents are well placed for getting out on foot or by bike and discovering the network of car-free trails the national park has to offer. You only need walk through the paddock gate and on to local footpaths before you start spotting New Forest ponies grazing along the verge and it’s only a ten-minute stroll to the nearest (excellent) local pub. Not that you should stop your walk at that point. Persevere – it’s worth it – to see deer and other wildlife along the Lady’s Mile footpath or walk down to the little suspension bridge across a particular pretty stretch of the River Avon.

If you want to leave the boundaries of the New Forest, it’s a half-hour drive to Bournemouth Beach, 20 minutes to Salisbury (a good bet on a rainy day) and 35 minutes to Stonehenge. Just make sure you’re back by evening time, when campfires glow across the paddock, children rest their weary heads and a renewing sense of calm falls upon the meadow – a soporific ambience that’s well worth savouring.

The Owner Says

Back in 2009 I started a wonderful 28 day pop up campsite within the New Forest. After six fantastic years I hung up my campsite hat to launch a self catering holiday lets business - Arniss Holidays. Last year I trialled 6 Bell Tents within the campsite with great feedback. This year I am delighted to be back offering the 6 Touareg Bell Tents in a brand new exclusive location in the paddock behind Arniss Farmhouse holiday let. The tents will be situated on levelled pitches.  The fully equipped Bell Tents comfortably sleeps 5 making it perfect for families and couples looking for a camping holiday with a touch of luxury. The paddock offers 2 showers, 2 portaloo style toilets, a kitchen area with a washing up sink, fridge/freezer phone charging and electric point - not to mention direct access to the New Forest, stunning views and a short walk to a pub. There is also a flushing toilet in the court yard just a few steps from the paddock.
