Eco-friendly glamping in the long grasses of North Devon with a permaculture garden, beekeeping and other sustainable projects at every turn – plus wetsuits and surfboards for the beach!

Originally founded back in 2014 but under new management since summer 2017, Koa Tree Camp promises a relaxed, eco-friendly retreat near the surf-friendly Hartland Heritage Coast. While sustainability is central to the agenda here, there’s a pleasing balance between Koa Tree’s green ethos and the luxury touches Hannah and Simon have taken care to cultivate. As Hannah puts it, “We love quiet meadows, the sun on our faces, and the feeling of being closer to nature that comes with camping, but we also enjoy comfy beds, good linen, space to cook dinner, and no queues for the (flushing) loos. We like warm service and thoughtful touches, not overly attentive, watch-your-every-move intrusion”.

Who says luxury camping has to just mean lazing about in your fancy geo-dome, cabin or bell tent all weekend? Sure, the spacious digs, fully-equipped 'surf-shack' kitchen facilities, private underfloor-heated bathrooms and snug 'rainy-day room' call out to the inner loafer. But at Koa Tree Camp, there's plenty to get stuck into to keep your days – and evenings – active. From regular barbecues and pizza nights featuring locally sourced, organic produce, to a yurt cinema for kids, an indulgent on-site massage hut and, naturally, surf equipment hire so you can hit the nearby waves.

Hannah and Simon don't compromise their green credentials either – water is recycled and renewable heating and wood-burning stoves are used throughout. Koa Tree Camp sits on a working smallholding, with projects including permaculture, beekeeping, livestock keeping and the re-establishment of woodland and waterways. Kids are always welcome to come and meet and help feed the animals, and there’s always someone around to chat about the many sustainable, eco-focused projects on the go.

It’s a large site, which never feels crowded and a mowed mini-sports ground in the middle of the site means there’s plenty of room for new friends to set up cricket stumps, chuck a Frisbee, or break into a spontaneous jumpers-for-goalposts kick-about. And, after all that exertion, you can while away your evenings supping scrumpy around the communal firepit while enjoying the clearest night skies in the South West.
