A private and spacious handcrafted shepherd's hut on the edge of a woodland near Axminster and Lyme Regis

If you’re headed for Little Firs, make sure you bring board games, books, binoculars and buckets and spades. And that’s not just for the kids. This magical little hideaway will suit couples and families of up to four equally well. It’s a single shepherd’s hut that’s been handcrafted by its owners on the edge of a small woodland on the Dorset-Devon border. Private and self-contained, it’s the kind of glamping getaway where you spend quality time with the people you have come away with, rather than making new best friends.

So back to that packing list. You’ll want board games to play while you warm yourself by the log-burning stove on chilly evenings and books to read on sunny mornings outside. The binoculars will give you a sporting chance of spotting the owls you’ll hear in the woods around you each evening. And the bucket and spade? Those are the necessary tools for the fossil hunting you’ll want to do on the Jurassic Coast at Lyme Regis, just a 15-minute drive away.

This tiny glamping getaway in the Axe Valley has been lovingly put together by owners Laura and Matt who live right next door. It was a lockdown project that went right. While others among us pulled muscles emulating internet fitness gurus or failed to learn French, this creative pair set about building a lovely place to stay using as many reclaimed and recycled materials as they could find. The result is a very spacious, self-contained shepherd’s hut with a mixture of quirky touches (check out the driftwood lampshade and old forge barbecue) and mod cons that include an en-suite bathroom.

The hut has its own fenced garden area and and it's self check-in, which means you can keep yourselves to yourselves if you like but Laura and Matt are never far away if you need help or local tips. They can point you to doorstep walks or in the direction of the Old or (almost as old) New Inn pubs. They’ll tell you about the lovely local produce at nearby Miller’s Farm Shop and the Axminster Waffle House your kids will love. But, of course, it’s the coast that most will head here for. While the crowds will camp near the beach, this hidey-hole hut just seven miles inland from Lyme Regis will be yours alone to enjoy. After busy days by the sea, it’s a calm and quiet retreat – except, of course, for the hoots of the owls and the whoops of the latest board game champ.

Little Firs has its own parking area for 2 cars, once parked up, walk through the wooden gates, into the huts own secluded gravelled Garden area, with covered dinning area. It has a converted old forge BBQ and outside kitchen area and mobile wood fire pizza oven. The hut itself offers a wealth of space inside, with it's handcrafted kitchen area, with 2 ring hob, microwave, under counter fridge freezer. A wall mounted TV with built in DVD player, underbed storage for clothing etc. The sleeping area sleeps up to 4 people with the lower bunk a kingsize bed, with steps to a upper floor area with a double bed, at the other end of the hut is a luxurious en-suite shower room, with walk in shower, basin, fully flushing toilet and heated towel rail. All bedding and towels are provided. The hut has a classic wood burning stove and oil filled radiator for those chiller evenings. Little Firs sleep up to 4 people, the upper bunk does have a safety screen, but under 2 year olds, maybe find the steps a little tricky. unfortunately no pets allowed on site.

Little Firs Shepherd Hut
Idyllic
The Hipcamp website really doesn't do this wonderful, cosy and peaceful stay justice. My family of four had an absolutely lovely weekend break and would highly recommend this accommodation. The weather wasn't that great during our stay but there is ample room and cover to sit outside and enjoy the vista over a glass of wine an a hearty barbecue. Cleanliness is something I look for when I stay away and this place was spotless; thanks from all of us to our very generous hosts.

Little Firs Shepherd Hut
This is the perfect base for some quality time, the children had planned a night each in the top bunk and ended our trip snuggled in together. We loved sleeping in the same space and watching the jungle book tucked in and cosy, with the woodburner crackling away. Twenty minutes from Lyme Regis and Beer, we were planning pizzas in the huge outdoor cooking area but ended up with a fresh fish BBQ feast. Everything has been thought of, the cabin is a perfect home from home, spacious and immaculate with a really good shower. I would happily live in it for a month, listening to the birds and looking at the rolling hills. We will definitely be back xxx

Nearby attractions

Little Firs is situated in the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on the edge of the village of Kilmington, which is home to two pubs and an award-winning farm shop (see below). You can walk directly from site on local footpaths in to the surrounding woodland and countryside. The Jurassic Coast is seven miles to the south and Lyme Regis is one of the closest seaside resorts with charming cobbled streets, great beaches, fossil hunting and its famous harbour arm, The Cobb. Head to the Lyme Regis Museum (01297 443370) for a guided fossil hunt. Beer is another recommended seaside spot that's just a mile or so further from site and nearby Seaton is home to the Seaton Tramway (01297 20375). Inland, the market town of Axminster is less than four miles from Little Firs. Axe Valley Wildlife Park (01297 34472) is a small, friendly zoo, that's less than two miles up the road.

Food and drink
The village of Kilmington itself has two pubs within walking distance, The New Inn (01297 33376) which is great for a drink after a walk and The Old Inn (01297 441855). There's also a garage and Millers (01297 35290), a fantastic award-winning farm shop with a cafe, for supplies if you want to cook at home. In Axminster there's great produce for sale at the River Cottage Deli and Kitchen (less than four miles from site) or head a mile further to River Cottage HQ (01297 630300) — although you'll need to book well ahead if you want to get involved in any of its courses or dining events. For fresh seafood, head seven miles south to Lyme Regis where there are a range of shops and eateries.
