A stylish glamping getaway for two with a wood-fired hot tub, fire pit and rustic outdoor kitchen in a tiny private woodland

Three-quarters of an acre of woodland, two people, and just one bell tent: Meriwood is a private glamping hideaway with impressive credentials in Devon. Tucked away in woodland on the edge of a tiny village in the Blackdown Hills, it’s a great place for a romantic rural retreat. With a fire pit, a wood-fired hot tub, and a rustic outdoor kitchen, you could be forgiven for thinking you’ve stepped into a Scandinavian fairy tale — and yet it’s just a five-minute walk to a traditional Devonshire pub.

Meriwood is hidden in a copse of trees beyond the owners’ house and, on arrival to their driveway, you might wonder if you’ve come to the right place for your glamping getaway. But, soon enough, Sarah or Giles will appear and show you the way to the little woodland wonderland they’ve created for their guests. You’ll walk through a tiny orchard and across a grassy paddock before you reach your private copse of trees.

Here, bedecked in neutral colours, is your bedroom in a bulbous Lotus Belle Tent and there’s your outdoor bath: a wood-fired hot tub in the trees. The kitchen, shower, and toilet are timber-and-corrugated-tin constructions. At first glance, the use of natural materials, the woodsmoke, and the trees give the appearance of a rustic camp suited to a woodsman from that fairy tale we mentioned. But look a little closer and you’ll see a softer, more stylish side: a well-made king-sized bed, soft rugs, fluffy towels, and delightful-smelling toiletries. Every element here, from fire pit to showerhead, has been carefully thought through to look good and function well in the outdoor environment.

Sarah and Giles escaped here from London and it’s likely that many of their guests will be doing the same. Those folk might be content whiling away the hours reading, cooking, and watching birds and butterflies in the dappled light of this leafy cocoon. But others will come for the location in the Blackdown Hills, close to the Devon-Somerset border. From here, you can explore glorious countryside and Devonshire towns like Axminster as well as the Jurassic Coast, Dartmoor, and Exmoor National Parks if you don’t mind a bit of a drive. However you spend your days, you won’t want to miss a visit to the nearby King’s Arms and you won’t be able to miss the stars that pepper the skies on cloudless nights. Millions of them twinkle above this three-quarter-acre wood where two people can have one very good time.

Inside our Luxury Lotus Belle Tent you'll find a King Size bed with linen, duvet and pillows. Super comfy lounging chairs, soft rugs underfoot. Plugs to charge your phone, and a Nespresso machine for those mornings you really don't want to venture out of bed.

Outside, discover the Luxury of a wood-fired bathing experience. Our hot tub is cleaned and freshly filled for you at the start of your stay. Lighting the fire is easy and it takes about 1.5 hours in Summer to warm up to a toasty temperature.

Whilst you're waiting, cook up a feast in our rustic outdoor kitchen with your own crockery, cutlery, glasses and basic utensils provided. We provide a cool box, undercover seating area in case of showers and gas hob with kettle.  Our ingenious Scandi firepit is perfect for long lazy evenings under the stars. A steel cooking ring surrounds the fire for a different BBQ experience.

Nestled in the wood, a short hop from your tent, our compost toilet and shower hut comes fully equipped with all natural 'Faith in Nature' products, fluffy towels and lots of running hot water.

Suitable For

Meriwood is suitable for couples seeking a private space to unwind and relax.  This is a new venture for us and next year we hope to be able to expand to allow family bookings.

Although we love dogs, we do ask that you don’t bring any pets to Meriwood. However well-behaved they might be, this is a farming area and we need to be respectful of livestock in the surrounding fields.

Meriwood is located on the edge of a tiny village in East Devon, in the Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The dark star-filled skies are one of the qualities that makes this area of Devon so special at night. By day there are numerous footpaths to explore in the village and further afield. Or you can head for the beaches of Lyme Regis & Charmouth, (30 minutes) Exmouth (40 minutes), and the Jurassic Coast. Dartmoor & and Exmoor National Parks are both about 1 hour away. There are a number of great pubs to be found locally, and Axminster or Honiton (both 15 minutes) are our local towns for stocking up on provisions.

Food & Drink

There's a lot to be said for having a great pub just a few minutes walk from your tent. The Kings Arms in Stockland is firm favourite with us for obvious reasons. If you fancy walking down for lunch or a night off BBQ duty please reserve your table when you make your booking as it can get very busy.  The Cotley Inn and The Tuckers Arms are both excellent pubs a few miles further afield; Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall's outpost in Axminster The River Cottage Kitchen, is a lovely place to stop off for a bite; And Millers Farm Shop in Kilmington is the place to head to for stocking up on provisions. See our explore page for more recommendations and things to do.
