Grown-up bell tent glamping within walking distance of Cheddar Gorge.

It doesn’t take long to work out how Owley Woods got its name. As soon as the sun starts to set, over nearby Cheddar, the owls begin their nightly twit-twoo. It’s a soothing serenade that accompanies the crackle of campfires at this adults-only glamping site on the edge of the Mendip Hills.

Owley Woods Glamping is a bijou little site, with five Lotus Belle Tents set up in a paddock that’s about an acre in size. Despite being high on the hills above Cheddar, the surrounding trees mean it’s a sheltered spot, which is probably why the owls and other birds like it too. But for Paula and Matt, who’ve decided to share this space with us glampers, it was the view that clinched the deal. From parts of the site, you can see Cheddar, the reservoir beyond, and right across the Somerset Levels. The West Mendip Way passes close by the camping field and provides a route to it all; to the shops and pubs of the village, to the top of the gorge, or through it.

Those who like to walk will be most happy to rest their heads here, and grateful for the proper beds and cosy bedding that’s inside the five-metre bell tents. They are spacious for two and dogs are welcome to stay with their owners in two of the tents. Although they are off-grid, there’s solar power for lighting and, handily, for charging phones. Each tent is kitted out with cooking equipment and there’s an off-ground fire pit with a barbecue grill outside as well as an outdoor log burner that doubles as a hot plate for cooking and kettles.

If you don't fancy cooking though, it’s close enough to wander down to Cheddar (a 15-minute walk or a five-minute drive). There you can gorge yourself on cheese (pardon the pun), pick up some Somerset cider, or visit one of the cafes or pubs. The busy tourist trade means there are plenty of places to choose from. Walking, cycling, caving, and climbing are all possible right here but if you fancy exploring Somerset further, Wells, Glastonbury, and towns on the coast are all easy days out too.

Facilities

Lotus Belle Tents really are the top of the range tents made from heavy duty weatherproof canvas. With plenty of room to move around and stand up, it really doesn’t feel like you’re camping! They have a roomy porch area which further extends the living area and is ideal for outdoor clothes, muddy boots etc, there is space for all your needs, and then topped with a leafy green cover to protect the bats and wildlife from any light spill.

Colourful and cosy, with rugs, throws, cushions and a king-size bed with luxury bedding. There are drawers to store your clothes, chairs or a sofa to relax on and tables to enjoy your favourite outdoor cooked meal (or local take-away from the many different cuisines available), all finished with those extra luxury touches and of course bunting and fairy lights.

The sofa can become a bed and bedding is provided for separate sleeping arrangements or for an extra person when notified in advance.

The tents are equipped with Crockery, Cutlery, pans etc along with a large cool box to keep your Prosecco cold on the warm evenings.

Powered by Nature!

Our tents are off grid, so we provide a solar portable power pack with USB sockets for phone charging (just in case you want to stay in touch with the outside world!), and solar lights for those darker evenings.

Our onsite facilities are brand new for this year and we love our wood clad amenity block which has two bathrooms and showers with a separate undercover washing up sink.

While you are waiting for your BBQ to get going, you can pass the time with our outdoor games including Croquet, Quoits and

Boules or simply relax in the trees in a hammock.

Nearby

Cheddar is obviously famous for its cheese, (check out Cheddar Gorge Cheese Company who make the only Cheddar still made in Cheddar), the sweetest strawberries, stunning walks and for the highest gorge in the country which is quite spectacular. The village and surrounding area are great for those seeking activity or for those looking for a more relaxed getaway, with climbing, caving, hiking or sightseeing and enjoying a cream tea just a few of the things to do in the immediate area.

Cheddar Village is just 15mins footpath walk from us (or 5 min drive) away with its vast array of pubs, cafes, restaurants, takeaways, supermarkets and lots of quirky shops. With Wells, Glastonbury, Weston Super Mare, Burnham, Brean and Street all within 30 minutes’ drive, there are no shortage of places to visit if you can bear to drag yourself away!

Food & Drink

Where to try first! So many gorgeous places to enjoy lovely food whilst taking in the views, and a choice of seven pubs who cater for every taste.

The gorge is full of fantastic cafes and restaurants and we would encourage you to try a different one each day and, don’t forget to leave room for a delicious cream tea.

There is also a takeaway from every corner of the globe from Pizza to Chinese, Indian to Thai and Italian to the award-winning British Chippy (some of whom deliver to site if you are feeling lazy)

If you need supplies Cheddar has a local deli, butcher and baker as well as a small Sainsburys and Tesco Express all within walking distance. Larger supermarkets can be found in Wells (20 mins drive) or Weston Super Mare (25 mins drive)

Cheddar is famous for its world-renowned Cheese and you can still watch the only ‘Cheddar made in Cheddar’ being made first-hand or see Cave-Aged Cheddar being matured in one of the caves. As you would expect, there is also some of the finest Somerset Cider, made and sold in the village, but first-timers beware, this stuff is very strong……

Cheddar is also well known for the sweetest Cheddar Strawberries which are sold by local farmers in roadside stalls, people travel for miles to buy them so try them and see for yourself!
