A quaint wooden cabin, tucked away on a Herefordshire farm. Perfect for a romantic glamping retreat or year-round family getaways.

Just three miles outside of the county town, Billy Goat Cabins feels surprisingly distant from Hereford, surrounded as it is by open fields dotted with sheep as far as the eye can see. Yet the wooden walls of the cabin are almost an ode to the Jacobean buildings that pepper the heart of the town centre. Like a strange hybrid between a beach hut, Scandinavian lodge and Hereford’s timbered Old House, the cabin is a wooden wonder that has a charmingly timeless feel.

In fact, so quaint is the Billy Goat Cabin, there’s even a children’s playhouse outside that mirrors its exact appearance – a doll’s house type replica that showcases its simplicity and beauty on a miniature scale. The real thing, though, has room for big kids too – up to four people, in fact, two in the master bedroom up on the mezzanine level and two more on a fold out futon that makes up the living area downstairs. There’s a dining area and wood-burning stove, plus a picnic area outside with a fire bowl and firewood for use.

Though the cabin has a distinctly hidden feel, part tucked among a copse of trees and out of view of any other buildings, a short stroll across the adjacent meadow leads you to another nearby wooden beamed house. This is the real treat of the site – an indoor heated swimming pool that’s free for cabin guests to use! Given the remote feel of the cabin, finding a warm swimming pool around the corner has an air of mischievous exclusivity about it, as though you’ve stumbled across someone else’s luxury villa and are sneaking in after dark!

There’s more watery fun to be found in Hereford itself. The old meadows provide a popular wild swimming spot in summer, with gravel beaches and deep pools intermittently dotting the River Lugg and River Wye, while the pubs and restaurants of the compact centre provide watering holes of a very different kind. Then there’s the mighty cathedral. Dominated by its sandstone tower, which was constructed in the early 14th-century to eclipse a second tower, it subsequently collapsed under its own weight in 1786. It’s here you can find some of the towns historic artefacts, including the famous Mappa Mundi, a 13th-century map of the world with all its centuries-old eccentricities. It’s rather different from the way we see the planet today – sprawling open spaces with just a few, sparse settlements plotted on the old parchment. There's a pleasing symmetry with the peaceful world of Billy Goat Cabins – rural escape on the modern-day map.

Facilities

The cosy cabin has a mezzanine level, housing the main king size mattress, and futon downstairs, that make up beds for another two people if necessary. There are two extra sleeping pods offering  privacy to other members of your group.  There is a small wood burner with kettle for hot water and small saucepans for heating beans and soup etc, plus an outside fire bowl for BBQs and campfire meals. We now have a pizza oven which sits on the outdoor fire bowl.  There is an outside compost toilet situated very close to the Cabin. The indoor swimming pool is a short stroll across the fields and here there are 2 showers and a flushing toilet.  The miniature cabin playhouses are just yards from the cabin – perfect for children to play in and act out their make believe woodland adventures. The one-acre woodland next to the cabin is also fun for kids to collect sticks for the fire.
The airstrip is located next to the Cabin and microlights often take to the skies in good weather.  They are permitted to fly from 8am to 8pm and many guests enjoy the personal air show and whilst many children and adults alike find this exciting please remain vigilant.  We try to keep extras to a minimum by providing free firewood, matches, firelighters and kitchen essentials (washing up liquid, cloths, hand soap) .
I am more than happy to do all I can (within reason!) to make sure you have everything you need for your stay here; I have given lifts, prepared shopping, transported luggage, received courier deliveries and moved around furniture so please do get in touch if you have any particular requirements or requests whilst contemplating booking.

Suitable For

Perfect for couples, families and friends who enjoy the outdoors but would prefer the comfort of a soft mattress and sturdy walls rather than tent living!   The Cabin is very well insulated with a small indoor wood burning stove meaning that it is a super cosy retreat all year round whatever the weather outside.  The indoor heated swimming pool is extremely popular with our guests and is free for Cabin guests to use from 1:30pm onwards each day.  Well behaved dogs are very welcome on the farm all year round.

Nearby

The site is actually close enough to Hereford that you can walk right into the town centre – it takes just under an hour to reach the cathedral from your cabin (around 3 miles). The cathedral (01432 374200) itself is worth a visit – examine the Mappa Mundi and The Chained Library – and over the road there is a museum and art gallery (01432 260692), plus Hereford's famous Black and White Village with a trail taking in the best houses, including the famous Old House (01432 260694). In the opposite direction, it's a short drive to Snell's Fruit Farm (01989 730229) on Windmill Hill. They grow delicious strawberries and host Pick-Your-Own during summer. Further afield the market towns of Abergavenny, Monmouth, Ledbury, Ross-on-Wye and Hay-on-Wye will keep you busy or head south to the Forest of Dean for more rural adventures - such as canoeing, Go Ape, cycle tracks, bike hire, steam railways and ancient woodland.  Oakerwood Leisure is situated north of the county and offers a wide range of outdoor activities such as paintballing, quad biking and high ropes.  Walks such as Garway Hill, The Skirrid, The Sugar Loaf, The Black Mountains, Hay Bluff, The Golden Valley and Llanthony Priory are all fun possibilities for a day out walking.  For indoor entertainment both The Courtyard Theatre in Hereford and The Savoy Theatre in Monmouth offer a wide range of performances such as comedy, speakers, plays, pantomime, dancing as well as cinema.   More indoor local indoor entertainment includes Green Spider Climbing, The Core for roller skating and Play Planet for soft play for younger children.

Food & Drink

It's a couple of miles to The Grafton (01432 355233), which is the closest pub for food, and a couple more to The Black Swan (01981 540295) in Much Dewchurch. The Harewood End Inn at Harewood End, The Axe and Cleaver at Much Birch, The Pilgrim Hotel Restaurrant, The Kilpeck at Kilpeck and The Tump at Wormelow are also recommended for nearby pub food.  For something really fancy, though, try the upmarket restaurants The Hardwick (01873 854220) and The Walnut Tree (01873 852797; book well in advance). Oakchurch (01981 500125) is the place to go for locally-produced meats, cheeses, wines, fruit, vegetables and, of course, cider, for which Herefordshire is famous. There's even a cider museum (01432 354207) in town, along with Weston's Cider Distillery (01531 660233).  For more local recommendations to meet your specific interests please ask Adrian and Sally as we have a lifetime of local knowledge to share with you.

The Owner Says

The Billy Goat Cabin is the name given to our unique hand-crafted Cabin (Adrian designed and built the Cabin himself in 2016) and it offers a cosy retreat with beautiful views.  The Cabin sits on its own at the farm and therefore visitors are our exclusive guests.  The site feels private and peaceful except for the times the microlights are taking to the sky which can provide its own entertainment! Our stunning natural backdrop is the perfect place to be at one with the outdoors. We have recently taken great joy in providing a meeting point for close friends to reunite, a venue for a romantic marriage proposal as the sun set behind Hay Bluff and many opportunities for families to relax together whilst collecting sticks in the woods, toasting marshmallows in the fire pit and spending hours playing in the pool.  Some of our guests spend hours chatting, cooking, swimming and happily catching up and relaxing whilst not leaving the farm and others spend long days having outdoor adventures in the Forest of Dean, Symonds Yat and the Black Mountains.  However you choose to spend your time here we are looking forward to welcoming you.
Sally and Adrian Powell.
