A yurt farm without yurts but with plenty of space, wilderness and peace and quiet

What is a yurt farm? Is it a regular farm that happens to have yurts on it? Or is it a place where yurts are farmed, grown from tiny little yurtlings into fully-grown wood and canvas structures? In fact, the Yurt Farm in central Cerdigion is neither. And, despite the name, it is currently, confusingly, not home to any yurts at all.

Having spent years welcoming glampers to their namesake structures, The Yurt Farm have taken a break for 2020, while they re-shape the farm to make it even better than before. In the interim, however, couples or families can enjoy the site all to themselves, with a beautifully restored train carriage available in the most beautiful area of the farm.

Overlooking a spacious hay meadow, formerly occupied by the yurts, the train carriage has gorgeous views of the Cambrian Mountains. The location of this glampsite is perfect; ridiculously remote and enveloped in the sort of rich, green countryside for which Wales is famous. And the love is evident everywhere; a welcome basket of tasty veg for guests; the comfy king-sized organic mattress on your bed; a woodburner to keep you cosy. The smell of the western red cedar that lines the carriage is incredible.

Most of the glamping time here will no doubt be spent outdoors, with so much space to fill on the farm. In all, there are 150 acres to be discovered, criss-crossed by a network of farm trails and children are free to explore, make dens, hide in the long grass, play in the sand, hang off rope swings, collect eggs, be licked by cows and gorge themselves silly on the blackcurrants and gooseberries that grow in the meadow.

With the striking Cambrian mountains as a backdrop to this enchanting place, there’s no doubt this beautiful, remote location enhances the blissed-out go-slow vibe. But if it’s the yurts your after on this wild and beautiful yurt farm, then, until next year, the farmer hasn’t finished growing them yet.

The cedar-lined train carriage features an organic king-sized bed, basic cooking equipment, including a gas hob, a basket of farm goodies, a wood-burning stove plus logs and kindling. Outside, there’s a BBQ or fire pit and a picnic table. Next door is the compost loo and solar shower. You also have exclusive use of the cabin which has a pizza oven, a well-equipped kitchen, a wood-burning stove and a comfy sofa. Here you’ll find games, books, maps, outdoor cooking gear and a charging point. There’s also a sand-pit, swing, a well-stocked woodshed.

Suitable For

Glamping only. Tents, campervans and caravans – no.

One of the highlights of the area is watching the famous dolphins of Cardigan Bay. You can get a boat from nearby Newquay. Details of a whole raft of days out can be found in the cabin, including the Centre For Alternative Technology which is around an hour's drive away. Explore the National Trust farm Llanerchaeron 20 minutes away or visit their Dolaucothi Gold Mines where you can try your hand at panning for gold; useful if you’re planning an extravagant meal at the Harbourmaster Hotel!

Food & Drink

Our nearest pub The Hungry Ram, is only a 30 minute up the lane in the old village school.   They serve great food and drink to eat in or take away.  Just over 3 miles away is the traditional Rhos Yr Hafod Inn (01974 272644) at Cross Inn with the tiny windows, thick walls, crackling fires and decorated oak beams that all old pubs should have. Foodies will want to head a bit further to Aberaeron harbour and the delightful Harbourmaster Hotel (01545 570 755). For an open fire, great ale and food go to Y Talbot (01974 298208) in Tregaron.

The Owner Says

The Yurt Farm was set-up in 2009 by Thea and Laurie on their organic family farm, twenty minutes from the sea. Four muddy children and a few changes later, we now run as an exclusive use site with just the Train Carriage for hire.  The Train Carriage sits in a hay meadow (formerly inhabited by 4 yurts, hence the name!) and is surrounded by woodland and very big starry sky at night.

Collect eggs from the hens that cluck around the field and fry them up for breakfast on your campfire while you listen to the birds singing.  From your doorstep, wander along the many country paths and quiet lanes.  There's a pub within walking distance for a drink and food.  They even serve takeaways too.

The sea is only 20 minutes away.  Explore the sandy beaches, pretty harbours and quiet coves or Cardigan Bay.  Dolphin watching is a must too, it's one of the best places in the UK to spot them.

Play games in the cabin.  Take a hot solar-powered shower and relax while your children build dens and catch grasshoppers in the long grass... you'll love it xx

Fire up the pizza oven in the evening for a woodsmoke infused feast.  Snuggle down in the super cosy Train Carriage as you watch the stars come out.  You might even see the owls too... you'll love it xx
