Adults-only glamping in beautifully handcrafted shepherd huts with lake and mountain views on the Llŷn Peninsula

The thing that stands out most about Brook Cottage Shepherd Huts is the view. Or perhaps it’s the artistry of the huts themselves. Or maybe it’s the location on Wales’ Llŷn Peninsula, or the locally-made artisan soap in the en suite bathroom. Truth is, it’s hard to pick a favourite element when a place to stay has been as carefully curated as this. The view, the loo, the location and everything else combine to make this an utterly charming place for grown-up glamping in the far northwest of Wales.

There are five handcrafted huts here at Brook Cottage on the banks of a small lake, each with a view of the Yr Eifl mountains. And despite the lofty outlook, you are only three miles away from seaside Pwllheli. That’s the thing about the Llŷn Peninsula: you’re never too far from anywhere you want to visit. And Brook Cottage is just about perfectly placed if you want to see it all. It’s midway between the north and south coasts and almost equidistant between Yr Wyddfa (Mount Snowdon) and the furthest fingers of this peninsula, which is known as Snowdon’s Arm.

Handbuilt by owners Jonathan and Mark, the huts are self-contained, stylish and unique. Each has its own colour palette: all muted, dusky, understated tones, warmed by the natural hues of hessian and wood. There’s thoughtful lighting and a log-burning stove too — which they’ll light before you arrive. There are three styles of hut here: shepherd, poachers and gypsy huts with the main difference in size and resulting price. The biggest is the shepherd and the smallest the gypsy hut, but whichever you choose, each is fully self-contained with a double bed, a well-equipped kitchenette and its own en-suite shower room (it’s here you’ll feel the size difference the most).

Outside you can cook over your fire while watching the sun go down behind distant mountains and see the stars, as they come out, reflected in the little lake. But, tempting as it is, don’t just put your feet up and while away all your hours here. To do that would be to miss the most elemental thing of all — the ground you’re standing on, Llŷn itself. It’s a microcosm of everything we love about Wales, full of cultural heritage, from its fantastic beaches to the nearby mighty mountains.

Brook Cottage Shepherd Huts has also received an AA Gold Award! The inspector wrote...

"In terms of AA Quality Standards Brook Cottage Shepherd Huts has achieved a well deserved Gold Award. I received a warm welcome from Mark Barrow and found his enthusiasm infectious as we viewed all aspects of this new and exciting holiday destination for lovers of a wonderland unspoilt part of The Principality. The vision to create this unique destination is commendable and attention to detail is particularly noteworthy. The individuality within the huts is particularly impressive and both practical and thoughtful items are enhanced by quality of design.  I wish Mark and Jonathan the continuing success they thoroughly deserve following this well deserved recognition."
