Geodesic glamping domes with a ceiling that lets you stargaze and a dark-sky setting on the edge of Dartmoor

Book a stay at Dartmoor Domes and you'll swap your bedroom ceiling for a canopy of stars. Tucked in a little meadow that’s surrounded by trees in deepest, darkest Devon, these geodesic domes offer a window into the natural world. The skylight in the roof lets you stargaze while you lay in bed and the huge picture windows let you spy on deer passing by.

It’s all about being comfortably cocooned in nature at Dartmoor Domes, which sits just south of the national park and 10 miles from the nearest beaches. On arrival it seems appropriate that you leave the car behind and walk 150 metres through a woodland and over a stream before finding the site’s four domes. Each sits on its own wooden deck, like a bubble that’s floated in and landed there. The reality, of course, was more hard work than that. A labour of love by owner James, who carried every piece of the puzzle into site and constructed somewhere to stay so his glamping guests don’t have to.

The domes are insulated and inside have made-up beds and a log burner to keep things cosy. Outside there’s a little kitchen cabin and a solar shower on your deck with your own private toilet just a few steps away. Sit outside and from this sheltered low-point in the land, you can see alpacas grazing in the fields that rise up behind you and hear woodpeckers tap, tap, tapping in the trees. The site is bathed in sun from mid-morning until sundown and if you get too hot, the tinkling stream which passes by each dome offers a place to cool hot feet (or drinks).

From this location in south west Devon, Dartmoor and the coast hold equal appeal; one an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the other a National Park. It was a love of these outdoor spaces that kept James and his wife Em coming on holiday to Devon year after year, until they decided to stay. It’s the wild open moorland that James says he loves the most but, then again, there’s that particularly spectacular stretch of the South West Coast Path. And don’t forget those stars; so dazzling, he put a window in the roof so you wouldn't miss them as you drift off to sleep.

Wonderful place
What a fantastic place. The domes were fantastic, perfect balance of comfort and rustic. Everything was immaculately clean when we arrived and we didn’t need for any thing, even the squirty cream for the hot chocolates was in the fridge. All the staff we met were great and so friendly. I couldn’t recommend Dartmoor domes highly enough and we will definitely be returning. 5 stars.

We had a great stay at Dartmoor domes. I would highly recommend it and would love to visit again. The domes were equipped with everything you could need along with bbq and fire pit (childrens favourite!) Beautiful setting surrounded by nature & wildlife, we even had sheep & deer visit us whilst sitting outside in the evening. Five stars ⭐️🙂

We were very lucky to have am amazing stay at Dartmoor Domes last year and were excited to be back. We have once again had an outstanding experience. The site is so beautiful with a bubbling stream that our two children enjoyed playing in. We loved the site so much that we choose to spend an entire day playing and relaxing on site. The dome was very comfortable with plenty if space to relax even with two adults and two children sleeping in it. The kitchen and shower facilities were well stocked so you only need to bring your food and clothes with you, making packing less stressful. Our dome also has an amazing wood fired hot tub which my husband and I enjoyed stargazing from. The location is on the entrance to Dartmoor with all its beautiful walks and views but is also easy access to Plymouth and the A38 which links up much of south west Devon and Cornwall. The really crown jewel of this site are the owners. James, Em and their family clearly love this area and this shines through in the whole site. They are a fountain of knowledge and always seemed to be there with an offer of help. Our children also got the opportunity to see some of the animals with a kind guided tour. We will definitely be coming back

Even though we only live in Exeter this is the second time we have chosen to spend our holiday at Dartmoor Domes. It is perfectly situated within striking distance of many sites, adventures and activities. Emma, James and Tim are all such lovely and hospitable people with kind hearts. The domes are fully kitted out for everything you'd need and there is plenty of space for kids of all ages to roam and explore in safety. The hot tub is also an amazing addition!

We had a wonderful time at Dartmoor Domes. The location is perfect both for how picturesque it is and how easy to visit some wonderful places. The Dome itself was stunning and it's extremely well resourced (including the fantastic smores kit left by James and Emma). My daughter utterly loved feeding the alpacas and horses. What a fantastic get-a- way.

Escape to the rugged beauty of Dartmoor, Devon with a stay in one of our luxurious, insulated domes. Walk the moors and the coast path, swim and surf in the sea, cycle the Drakes trail, or simply sit by the stream and breath it all in. Whatever your plans, Dartmoor Domes is the perfect location for an amazing holiday. Set on the southern tip of Dartmoor in our four acres of woodland we have four geodesic domes nestled by the stream. Perfect for dipping toes or paddling on a hot day, or simply enjoying the sound of the water passing by. The domes are positioned in a small meadow deep in the valley. Each dome is at least 25m away from the next and we leave the meadow as will as we can. This means the later in the season you come the more the ferns seclude the domes.
Nearby attractions

The south west edge of Dartmoor National Park is just a couple of miles away and the area is great for walking, river swimming and taking in this unique landscape. There are many outdoor activities, including great cycling, diving, climbing, surfing, swimming, scuba diving and sailing on the Devon and southern Cornish coast. The Drake's Trail cycle route passes close by site linking Tavistock to the north and Plymouth to the south. To reach it you pass through Cann Wood, less than a mile from Dartmoor Domes, and worth a visit in its own right for mountain bikers and walkers. For coastal walks, head for the well-signposted South West Coast Path, perhaps heading out from Bovisand Beach (10 miles from Dartmoor Domes). The stunning National Trust beach at Wembury is a beautiful spot for time on the beach and about the same distance, while, for surf, you'll need to head to Bantham, 20 miles away. It's only a 20-minute drive from your dome to the historic waterfront city of Plymouth, where there's all sorts of entertainment, including harbour boat tours and the National Marine Aquarium (0844 893 7938). Further afield the Eden Project (01726 811972), and Tintagel Castle are absolute musts while you're in the South West, both are a little over an hour's drive away.

Food and drink

The closest place to get a bite to eat out is less than a mile away at The Farmyard Cafe (07711 583985), a slightly ramshackle little place that welcomes dog walkers, horseriders and offers a great-value menu of fry ups, burgers and, of course, cream teas. For the closest pub, you'll have to travel further. The Skylark Inn (01822 853258) is four miles away; a short drive or a long walk (uphill there, downhill back). And if you want a special meal out while you're on holiday, book in at The Moorland Hotel (01752 839228), three miles from Dartmoor Domes. If you're catering for yourself, you can stock up on local goodies at the Cornwood Store and Tearoom (01752 878885), five miles from site, or the recommended farm shop at Endsleigh Garden Centre (01752 895533), 10 miles away. Plymouth, with all its supermarkets, shops and eateries, is just eight miles away for anything more.
