Eco camping on an organic farm just a hop from Exeter city centre and 25 minutes from the coast

It seems odd that you can camp somewhere so beautifully rural and agricultural yet still, really, be just on the outskirts of a city. Just two miles from Exeter city centre and its mighty cathedral, West Town Farm pulls off this impressive feat. And it's not just a farm. It's a lusciously green, organic space, tucked amid the hedgerows of the Fordland Valley. Come here and you'll find a place to camp, a place to explore and, also, a place to learn, with an on-site education centre and an enthusiastic farmer ready to show you what it's all about.

Pocketed within the 270 acres of organic land, the off-grid campsite is based in one of the farms most accessible fields, at the foot of a slope between Chillies Copse, full of old oaks and bluebells, and the gentle path of Fordland Brook, ideal for kids wanting to build stick dens or dip their toes in the cool water of the stream. Facilities are simple and eco-friendly – there are composting loos – while an onsite farm shop is packed with organic produce, including pasture-fed meat from the farm and organic veg.

With pigs, cattle and sheep, West Town is very much a working farm but, for farmer Andy and his team, this also means being custodians of the land and working in a way that supports local wildlife, providing habitats for various animals, including voles and owls. The farm is part of the environmental stewardships initiative and, along with welcoming local primary school children for tours and educational visits, there's also a farm trail with interpretation boards that campers can explore. They also hosts a range of events throughout the summer, including dining events, as well as pumpkin picking, so make sure to time your stays accordingly if there's an event that takes your fancy, however there will be a mobile sauna and takeaway food in the campsite on selected dates.

With so much to do on the farm itself, you might not initially feel inclined to leave but glance at a map and you'll soon be reminded why you travelled to this corner of South Devon. Dartmoor is just a 20-minute drive away, Exeter is on your doorstep and it's 25 minute's to the beaches of Exmouth, Budleigh Salterton and Dawlish Warren.

Fantastic campsite
The campsite was lovely, clean and tidy and we had the whole place to ourselves. We camped but there are bell tents available. The location is super handy for exploring Exeter and the surrounding countryside. The farm shop super handy too, we loved our stay would highly recommend.

We loved camping at West town farm, my kids begged to stay for another day because they loved the place, they saw farm animals, fruits and the trail is really nice. We watched the sunrise and sunset together by the hill. The place has camping supplies as well.

From the host
Spread over 270 acres of land, West Town Farm has been organically farming since 1990 and is the perfect place to escape for a rural summer break. The campsite is based in one of the farms most accessible fields and is located between Chillies Copse and Fordland Brook, ideal for kids wanting to build stick dens or dip their toes in the cool water of the stream. Let your imagination run wild as you walk our farm trail, which takes you around all of the hidden wonders that the farm has to offer. Even the most technology inclined teens won't be able to resist putting down their phones and taking in the stunning nature around them! Our off-grid campsite is also great for eco-campers who are looking to book a break with minimal environmental impact. With compost toilets, recycling points and our on-site, locally sourced farm shop you can allow your conscience to rest with ease whilst still enjoying a few familiar comforts. Car parking facilities are available next to the camping site but the site is also accessible by train and bus. As part of our aim to be as 'green' as we can, we'd love to encourage you to travel by foot, bike, bus or train.
Nearby attractions

It takes less than 15 minutes to drive into the heart of Exeter, with its famous gothic cathedral to visit, followed by a walk along the smartly regenerated quayside area or perhaps a guided tour around the town. In fact, if walkings your thing, you can easily skip any parking trouble by walking straight from the campsite in to town – it's around an hour from your tent to the cathedral. If you aren’t already full from the campsite's farm shop, use the extra space to take full advantage of the Street Food Night Markets – you won’t be disappointed. The Inside Outside summer craft fair is also a firm favourite for kids and teens. For those looking for a sunny day at the beach, there's a wide choice of tourist favourites, all around half an hour away, including sandy Dawlish and Exmouth and the pebbles of Budleigh Salterton.

Food and drink

It's a 15-minute walk to the nearest pub in the village of Ide, The Poachers Inn (01392273847), while, at the further end of the high street, there's also The Huntsman (01392272779), a relaxed local haunt with a large beer garden serving reginal ales and traditional food. The Poachers also has a great garden, looking out onto the surrounding hills. They have an extensive wine list with over 20 varieties available as well as a large gin and tonic menu. Alternatively, you can find your way into the city centre or Exeter quayside (15 minutes’ drive or an hours walk) for a whole host of pubs, cafes and restaurants. On The Waterfront is a particular favourite, their heated terrace area sits right on the quayside making the perfect summer dining spot.
