Moon Valley Glamping

Scaldwell, Northamptonshire, England

Group-friendly cabin-glamping for gatherings and get-togethers on a Northamptonshire cattle farm

People escape to the country for many different reasons, with fresh air, solitude, and nature high on the list. But what if you want all that, as well as a comfortable place to kick back for your large group or family gathering? That's harder to find, which is where Moon Valley Glamping sets out its stall as a group-friendly, cabin-glamping site that isn't afraid to prioritise socialising over peace and quiet.

It's farm-based, so nature is all present and correct if you want it, from the cattle and horses that come right up to the fence to Teddy, the resident miniature Shetland pony, who comes and says hello at the drop of a hat. But the accommodation and facilities are geared towards communal get-togethers, with the landscaped mix of cabins and huts set together village-style and focused on a sun-trap patio with a gas-fired barbecue, a fire pit area, and a couple of hot tubs. There's a nine-acre field beyond which you're encouraged to think of as your playground for football, rounders, or frisbee — you could even arrange for an archery session or clay-pigeon shooting here if that's your bag.

The two big bonuses are also all about sociable nights with a group of friends. The Store is a brick-built cooking and eating space, complete with a fully equipped kitchen (rotisserie, anyone?) and a massive chestnut-wood dining table, while an impressive hexagon-shaped, Scandi-style cabin at the heart of the site allows up to sixteen people to sit inside around a barbecue pit that is literally big enough to roast a pig. And yes, you can source a suckling pig — just give a local butcher a bit of notice. Given all this, low-key parties are definitely on the cards — all they ask is that the only sounds you use are from the supplied Echo Dot speaker (which comes with Amazon Music Prime).

When you finally slink away to bed, it's to modern, furnished cabins with comfy king-sized beds and big sofas that convert to another double. The biggest — Blueberry — has a separate bedroom and lounge area, as well as its own kitchenette, compost toilet, and gas-powered shower. The other three cabins share facilities in the shiny shower block, where there are two more hot-water showers, two flushing toilets, and a sink and mirror — potentially a bit of a squeeze with a large group, but only if everyone surfaces at the same time.

Beyond the farm gates is rural Northamptonshire, with the local pub just a 15-minute walk away across the fields. A footpath also takes you directly to the nearby recreational reservoir in around half an hour, which is another place you can put together a day of activities, from fishing to cycling. There's also bowling, indoor climbing, trampolining, crazy golf, and escape rooms within a half-hour drive of the farm. So all the elements are in place for a big meet-up or a family occasion — quite how rested you'll be afterward is entirely a matter for you.

Moon Valley Glamping is set on a family run cattle farm in the heart of the Northamptonshire countryside. If you enjoy being at one with nature then look no further. Sit back and enjoy the views of our cattle grazing. You may even catch a glimpse of Teddy, the cheeky miniature Shetland Pony, teasing one of the resident horses.
Nearby attractions

The nearest children's play area is in Scaldwell village, a 15-minute walk away, where there are climbing frames and a zip wire. The village of Brixworth, a couple of miles away, is the gateway to Pitsford Water (01604 781350), and it's the best day out in the vicinity, with a seven-mile waterside track to explore, as well as woodland and meadows, watersports, fishing, a nature reserve, children's play areas, picnic spots, and a cafe. Rent a bike from Rutland Cycling (0330 5550080) and you can either tootle around the seven-mile reservoir trail or hit up the 14-mile Brampton Valley Way, which runs between Northampton and Market Harborough.

Otherwise, if you don't want to tackle the 'big city' of Northampton, consider a day out in nearby Kettering, about eight miles away or a 15-minute drive. It's a handsome old market town, with a revitalised shopping scene in The Yards, and a fair few historic attractions in the rolling countryside beyond — like the eye-popping Boughton House (01536 515731), one of the country's grandest stately homes, a sort of English Versailles, with its Baroque staterooms, extensive fine art collection, beautifully landscaped grounds, and rambling country park.

Food and drink
The nearest pub is the White Horse (01604 781297) at Old, a 15-minute walk away across the fields, which is fine for a pint in a traditional country inn. Or there's The Swan (01604 696555) at Lamport — a lovely 45-minute cross-country walk — which is a better bet for eating, with a bistro menu, burgers, and steaks. At Brixworth Country Park, not far from Pitsford Water, the Willow Tree Cafe (01604 889343) does all-day breakfasts, baguettes, and burgers — a good pit-stop if you're cycling around the reservoir.
