A quiet, low-key camping base for exploring all that Sussex has to offer
Everyone’s looking for their own slice of camping heaven. And for some, they find it in deepest, darkest Sussex. Heaven Farm is a curious and quaint little place. Its principal summer activity is feeding hungry mouths at The Stable Tea Rooms, as a visit at lunchtime will confirm. The second big draw is the Nature Trail, an award-winning circuit through wooded parkland and alongside streams, where badger sets and foxes’ dens are to be found, as well as the odd bouncing wallaby (these creatures may be indigenous to Sussex, but one suspects not.) Then, there’s the Farm Museum, and what this motley collection of mothballed machinery lacks in excitement, it makes up for in extent. Across the path, a converted cart shed has been commandeered as a craft shop and does a roaring trade in pottery, plants and gifts. So, it’s all quite a bustle here in summer with these various comings and goings. Certainly, the campsite seems like an afterthought, last on the list of Heaven Farm’s priorities.Which makes it perfect – a spacious, quiet field, cuddled by trees, tucked away in a forgotten corner of the farm. It’s unassuming, unpretentious, undersubscribed – and under two hours from London. And with the Bluebell Railway, Ashdown Forest and Sheffield Park Gardens all within reach, it makes for a great weekend break. Heaven? That may be stretching it a bit, but the kids will certainly love it here.

Food and drink
There’s a well-stocked organic farm shop on-site. Or stock up on home-made marmalades, chutneys and nut-butters all made by the landlady at the Coach and Horses. Treat yourself to Saturday dinner or Sunday lunch, 1920s-style, on board the Golden Arrow Pullman Dining Train (01825 720801) whilst whizzing through the Sussex countryside. The Coach and Horses (01825 740369) in School Lane, Danehill, 2 miles north, is one of those rare finds where the quality of the food is equal to the character of the pub, and both get top marks here. Try local specialities like Ashdown venison or roast pork belly with black pudding and home-made apple sauce.
