A rustic, off-grid yurt in an arty craft and camping retreat in rural Lincolnshire

Campsites are great, obviously, but when you can also share someone's life and vision, doesn't that just make your back-to-nature trip that much more meaningful? Welcome then to the Lincolnshire countryside, where artists Alex and Azra have created a craft and camping retreat designed to connect you with the natural world.

From your off-grid yurt on the family farm — there's only one, so peace and solitude are also guaranteed — you can try your hand at silk-screen printing with Azra or lathe-turning, carving, or wood-working with Alex, before a night by the campfire under dazzling starry skies. The sunsets are magical in Lincolnshire's Big Sky Country; at dusk, the barn owls swoop down into the long grass on the hunt for mice. Beyond the farm, roll the Wolds, an ancient landscape of chalk downlands, medieval villages, and half-forgotten market towns. It's a county with a rich past in an England that's lesser-known, and it's utterly compelling.

Your base is a simply furnished, rustic yurt in its own little mown-grass compound, set against the backdrop of a sprawling hedgerow and with nothing but fields and woods in view. It's designed for a couple — there's a proper pine double bed, with tree-stump bedside tables — though families can add a couple of blow-up mattresses too if they wish. There's no power at all, which means a wood-burner for heat, solar lights inside and out, and torches provided to light your way after dark. There's cold water supplied to the adjacent kitchen shack, where there's all you need to make simple meals. You can heat water on the gas rings, or in a kettle on the wood-burner, and you might well need to do that as the open-air camping shower only supplies solar-warmed water. The loo is in a separate shack again, just a few steps away. The firepit becomes a focal point for the evening — if you want a barbecue, bring your own, but just make sure it's one you can raise off the ground.

Simple facilities, then, but perfect for the simple pleasures to be found down at Alex and Azra's place. Scratching chickens and hedgerow birds, walks in the woods and sunset drinks, marshmallows, and star-filled skies — you can see why the pair of them are living the dream, creating an artistic life in this dramatic landscape, and why they want to share it with visitors.

The Yurt Retreat is set in our 1.5 acre field with far reaching views of the countryside, approximately half the field is used by guests and the other half is used by us with a large cut flower patch, our Pygmy goat enclosure and a veg patch. The Yurt is off grid but does have an outdoor water tap, it has its own undercover outdoor kitchen, open air shower with changing area and a compost loo. There is also an area for sitting around a campfire and a picnic bench for eating at. The yurt is surrounded by long grass on each side which attracts various wildlife. https://www.instagram.com/floral.farm/

The Yurt Retreat
A magical 3 nights
What a magical place! I came for 3 nights with my two children (7 and 9). Alex and Azra were so welcoming and helpful and the yurt and facilities were just perfect - simple, rustic and beautifully made. It was. Great to have to whole place to ourselves and let the children run free. They loved visiting the goats, going on bike rides, and staying up late around the camp fire. I would recommend Floral Farm to anyone who wants to escape from reality, reconnect to nature, and have a camping experience with a touch of luxury.

The Yurt Retreat
An perfect mini break
We had the best stay with Azra and Alex on their farm! They were so welcoming, the yurt is beautiful and so comfortable! The attention to detail was amazing! They had everything you could think of, washing up liquid, matches, plates and cutlery! It was so peaceful and quiet! Azra and Alex have all the local knowledge and will direct you to the best pubs! We will definitely be going back next year!

Nearby attractions

The farm is just on the edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds (01522 555780), with any number of walks and bike rides within easy reach. It's an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), which hereabouts means rolling hills and valleys, and timeless villages with ancient pubs and historic churches. Quite a few circular walks start from the nearby towns of Market Rasen (six miles away) and Louth (12 miles) and you can download routes and maps from the AONB website.

The market towns are handsome old medieval survivors — this was once a rich trading area — and places like Louth and, especially, Horncastle (15 miles) are full of antique shops, so they are good places for a potter with nothing much in mind. Even the enticing city of Lincoln is only a half-hour drive away, and that's full of historic attractions, from Cathedral (01522 561 600) — tours daily, including the amazing view from the tower — to Castle (01522 554559), home to an original copy of the Magna Carta. You can also count on plenty of independent shops, cafes, and restaurants to break up the day.

With children in tow, you have plenty of options, too. Wild Pines (01673 842724) outdoor, woodland, high-ropes, and archery centre is less than a ten-minute drive away, on the edge of Market Rasen. Or for smaller kids, there's the petting farm and play zones at Rand Farm Park  (01673 858904), a 15-minute drive away. For a bucket-and-spade day, it's a longer drive out to the Lincolnshire coast — about 45 minutes from Floral Farm — where you can explore beautiful sandy beaches, dunes, and marshlands. Mablethorpe is the nearest resort, a traditional, family-friendly sort of place, with a good beach and all sorts of indoor attractions if the weather turns against you.

Food and drink

Just a couple of miles south — five minutes in the car — the Cross Roads Inn (01673 857629) at East Barkwith is the closest place for a pint and a bite to eat. It's about the same distance east to the Heneage Arms (01507 313145) in Hainton, which has the distinction of being run by and for the community — it's staffed by volunteers and they offer a simple menu of home-cooked food (currently only open on weekends). The best destination pub, though, is the King's Head (01673 838347) in the beautiful village of Tealby, a 15-minute drive north. It's absolutely gorgeous — the oldest thatched pub in Lincolnshire, with a hearty menu of pub classics, a great beer garden, and loads of real ales.

Five miles either side of the site are the small towns of Market Rasen and Wragby, each with supermarkets, pubs, and places to eat. The Adam and Eve (01673 858586) in Wragby is a family restaurant and bar with a Mediterranean menu, or for coffee and brunch check out the March Hare (01673 842076) in Market Rasen — this also morphs into a drinks and tapas place at night.

A bit further out, but well worth the drive, is Baumber Walled Garden, a lovely restoration of a 19th-century kitchen garden for a local estate, and now with a glasshouse and garden tea room. It's about a 20-minute drive away, on the route to Horncastle.
