Soak up laid-back tipi living in the beautiful Cledan Valley
It was love at first sight, owner Hywel Jones explained, recalling the moment he first laid eyes on a tipi. The image of one of these conical tents, tucked away in a woodland clearing, spurred Hywel to recreate the same enticing, hippyish vibe on this stunning spot in the heart of Wales’ Cledan Valley. And, by Jones, has he done well.
Upon arrival, you’ll be greeted by Hywel’s daughter, Beth, who will probably be chopping logs for the huge pile of communal firewood. ‘It can take a couple of smoky days to get the hang of fire-building,’ she laughs, as she hauls our bags on to her quad bike, ‘but most campers get it right by the end.’ She’s not wrong. This site was made for campfire-lovers, so you’re likely to leave as a Ray Mears in the making.
The eight tipis are scattered throughout an expanse of rolling meadow, and range in size from the snug Honeymoon tipi, rested on a secluded spot on the edge of the campsite, to the mammoth Red Kite – a huge 8.5-metre dwelling just begging for a roaring fire and a chorus of ‘Kumbaya’ at dusk.
Inside each tipi, you’ll find retro futons, sheepskin rugs, and psychedelic mats, but the main attraction is unquestionably the large wood-burning fire pit. If the thrill of making your own fire excites you most about camping, then this site was made for you. It might take a couple of watery-eyed days to hone your fire-starter skills, but the trick is to use dry wood without too much bark. Build it big to keep the fire hot, and the smoke will be drawn upwards, keeping you cough-free, quietly smug and snug.
Outside, there’s a small play area for the kids, but with eight acres of open land on their doorstep, they’ll while away hours hopping on to rope swings, building dens in the bracken, and exploring every nook and cranny on offer.
The campsite has a healthy-looking carbon footprint, too. The tipis are made down the road, in Llanbrynmair, and drinking water comes from its own natural spring. Grab some locally produced Neuadd Fach sausages from the village, and savour your surroundings while they sizzle on the BBQ.
From the welcoming smell of burning incense upon arrival, to the glowing embers of your hand-made fire and the gently babbling brook flowing past your tipi, there is something here to excite every sense. The owners have stuck to their roots, and Cledan Valley tipis doesn’t pretend to be anything it’s not; the old-school vibe is genuine, heartfelt, and that’s just how we (and the many regulars) like it.Location

Cledan Valley Tipis is all about taking it easy, chilling out and spending a few days or more exploring the stunning mid wales countryside, relaxing in front of a crackling log fire, maybe cooking over it too! We have secluded locations for the two person tipi’s, and the bigger family or group sized tipi’s are closer to the shower block and the track. All you need is bedding and food and drink, the Tipi’s are up and kitted out ready to go, more details of what is included are on our website.
availabilityBank holidays, and the school holidays always book up fast, with just 8 tipi’s spread out over our 8 acre site if you want a particular weekend or date or tipi then we recommend booking early. Off peak we do mid week specials, monday to thursday for the price of three nights-ask for details.
Nearby attractions
The Centre for Alternative Technology (01654 705950) in Machynlleth is a ready-made family day out. But don’t leave without exploring the local area on two feet. There are routes dotted around the Elan Valley for all levels of walker and cyclist. For more adrenaline-fuelled action, spend an afternoon quad-biking at Ty Mawr (01654 702746). Shoppers should head to the quaint market town of Llanidloes, which has heaps of quirky boutiques and is well worth a visit.
Food and drink
There aren’t many options in the village, but the Aleppo Merchant Inn (01686 420210) is a favourite with locals and offers hearty pub grub and a decent pint. Further afield, Corris has lots of great pubs to choose from. For campsite cuisine, a hearty selection of local meats is stocked the village Spar (01686 420550). Pont Farm can supply the greens, and their veg boxes can be ordered direct from the campsite.
