If for some reason you feel like getting lost, then Postern Hill is hard to beat for seclusion. Located in the peaceful Savernake Forest, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Postern Hill is a hidden woodland playground, surrounded by dry and wet valleys, ancient saplings (one of the oldest being the Big Bellied Oak) and rare wildlife including: Hawfinches, Redstarts, Nightjars and Red-tail Kites. There is something truly special about woodland camping, and just about every visitor that pitches at Postern Hill seems to fall under its magical spell.

The site's utterly basic, back-to-nature feel (there’s an onsite toilet block but no showers) may set it apart from some of its gaudy neighbours, however its worth mentioning that caravans are welcomed here, a fact that may send a shiver down the spine of some conventional campers. The majority of Postern Hill’s 170 spaces are flat, well maintained, and unmarked, with guests having the choice of pitching under beautiful oak trees or in the open meadow.

Geographically the location is a winner. Despite being found in the deepest depths of the forest, the nearest shops, pubs and supermarkets are surprisingly accessible. Whilst a mere 20 minute walk will take you into the picturesque town of Marlborough, which hosts a quaint market, selling everything from locally-grown produce to pashminas.

Thankfully some of Wiltshire’s finest attractions are close by too. For visitors who can’t resist that Stonehenge photo opportunity, you’re in luck, one of Britain’s most iconic tourist attractions can easily be reached. However, many pre-historic purists would say that Avebury (7 miles away) exceeds Stonehenge as England’s most fascinating pre-historic site. Spared from snap-happy tourists and over-commercialism, Avebury is arguably a more rewarding place to visit. It’s older (dating back to 3000 BC!), larger, and more peaceful than Stonehenge, with visitors allowed to walk freely around these mystifying stones.

If Postern Hill is magical by day, it really casts a spell at night. Sitting under the sparkling Wiltshire stars, cooking up some tasty local produce, whilst the shadows of your camping neighbours illuminate against white canvas is quintessentially what woodland camping is all about. And we think you should go and experience it for yourself.
