Yelloh Village La Plage

Let’s be clear from the get-go; Yelloh Village Camping La Plage has a distinct ‘holiday park’ vibe. Some traditional tenters may be put off by the whole plastic playground scene – but don’t be as what makes this site extra special is the location. With its wind-whipped coastline scattered with wave-lashed lighthouses, the Finistère coast is hard to resist. France’s westernmost department is wild and mysterious, and for many experienced campers, the countries most appealing corner. Located just a flip-flop from a strip of golden sand (50 metres to be precise!), Camping La Plage occupies a stellar location, which some 'less-touristy' campsites would give their last tent peg for.

Thankfully this serene spot is ideally adapted to cope with Brittany’s stiff sea breezes. Pitches are generously sized and come clearly defined by vegetation, offering plenty of privacy. If you would prefer to pitch close to the beach, or by the wash blocks, campers have the option of a ‘preferential camping pitch’ - you just need to indicate your required plot and the time of booking. Fancy a touch of luxury? Constructed 3.5 metres off the ground, access to the very cool ‘Cabin in the Tree’ (sleeping four) is up a winding staircase. You can enjoy a hearty breakfast on the terrace, which offers unobstructed views over the ocean.

Away from the seaside shenanigans, there’s plenty for culture vultures to experience. With fine museums, one of France’s most charming old quarters and a riverside setting, Quimper (a 30 minute drive) is Finistère's thriving capital and deserves a special mention. Small enough to feel like a village, its slanted half-timbered houses and narrow cobbled streets are a delight to explore. In the city's heart stands a Gothic cathedral, with a distinctive kink, which is said to symbolise Christ's inclined head as he was dying on the cross. After a morning's sight-seeing, many choose to spend sunny afternoons drifting down the Odet river, often referred to as “the prettiest river in France”.

For most seaside getaways the idea is to get as close to the sea as possible, and Camping La Plage (as the name suggests) well and truly ticks that box. Campers don’t have to be busy bees, but like other large campsites, there’s a lot going on, with tennis courts, children’s playground and a 600m² water park onsite. Unfortunately, the rates reflect all the care and attention that goes into maintaining a large site, so all the facilities do come at a price. But when you consider Camping La Plage’s location, and peer over to that wonderful coastal scenery, the cost seems justified.
