Luxurious, eco-friendly glamping deep in the heart of the Devon countryside

Somewhere between Dartmoor and Exmoor, almost midway between the beaches of Devon’s southern and northern coastlines, is Exe Valley Glamping. We’re not being deliberately vague about its location; it’s just that it’s somewhere a little off the beaten track. Book here and you’ll need to set your sat nav for the village of Bickleigh. That’s as far as four wheels will get you. After that, it’s a five-minute stroll through woodland to reach the site’s luxurious but eco-friendly, family-orientated safari lodges.

Thankfully, site owner Patrick will cruise up to the village in his Land Rover to collect your luggage so you and the kids can walk unencumbered through the trees. Although it’s the lie of the land that’s made the woodland walk necessary, you wouldn’t blame Patrick if he’d designed it this way. It’s a perfect introduction to rural Devon, a chance to unwind from the journey and for holiday anticipation to grow. And when you emerge from the trees you won’t be disappointed as you find yourself in a grassy glamping meadow where your lodge is one of just three.

The countryside concierge feel does not end with Patrick’s luggage delivery. Step inside your safari lodge and you’ll find beds are made, hot water bottles provided and, if you’ve been sensible enough to pre-order from the site’s Larder Menu, the kitchen is stocked with your choice of goodies from locally-sourced breakfast packs to bottles of Champagne. These spacious lodges are luxurious but not showy; tastefully decorated and designed with the environment in mind. They are en suite but off-grid with solar energy for lighting and power for your fridge. Natural materials and muted colours mean that the great outdoors remains the big attraction. There’s no hot tubs or TVs but there are campfires, stars and board games instead.

The woodland walk, of course, provides a handy link back to Bickleigh, which is more than just a place to park the car. There’s a selection of crafty shops and a tearoom in a watermill, riverside walks, a railway museum and a pub that serves food. There’s wild swimming in the Exe too but if you fancy a dip in the sea, Exe Valley Glamping is within an hour’s drive of sandy North Devon beaches and closer to the shinglier ones of the south. It’s closer still to the adventures out on Exmoor and Dartmoor - and the market town of Tiverton is just three miles away. In fact, the ‘somewhere’ that Exe Valley Glamping belongs to is not that far from anywhere in Devon. Stay here and you might just find there’s nowhere you’d rather be.

Nearby attractions

You park your car by Bickleigh Mill (01884 855 419) - a rural shopping centre and tearoom/bistro within a working watermill that’s worth a visit. From here you can join a footpath along the banks of the River Exe for picnicking and wild swimming - or to walk the three miles to Tiverton. The village is also home to the Devon Railway Museum (01884 855671), and Bickleigh Castle gardens (01884 855363) which you can tour if booked in advance. There’s plenty for active families to do, including walking, cycling, horseriding and the Dartmoor-specific sport of letterboxing with both Dartmoor National Park and Exmoor National Parks within a 20-mile drive of site. There’s also the Bear Trail (01392 881780), a family adventure-assault course, 10 miles away. From Exeter quayside, 12 miles away, you can hire bikes or paddleboards from Saddles and Paddles (01392 424241). For beaches, you can choose either of Devon’s coastlines. Saunton Sands is about an hours’ drive (42 miles) north of site. It’s one of North Devon’s best-loved surf beaches with three miles of golden sands. You can book surf lessons for the whole family with Surf Saunton (07837 906428). Budleigh Salterton is a closer, shingle beach (22 miles, approx 45-min drive) on East Devon’s Jurassic Coast.

Food and drink

You can get the fridge and cupboards within your lodge stocked before you even arrive by pre-ordering (at least two weeks before arrival) from the Larder Menu at Exe Valley Glamping. For supplies whilst in situ, the closest farm shop is Exe Valley Farm Shop (01392 861239) a 10-minute drive away and there are plenty of shops and a couple of supermarkets in Tiverton. The town also has a farmers’ market on the fourth Friday of the month. For eating out you can’t get closer than The Fisherman’s Cot (01884 855237) and the tearoom/bistro at Bickleigh Mill (01884 855419 - open for breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea every day and for dinners on Fridays and Saturdays only). Both are just at the end of the woodland walk in Bickleigh. A little further away is the family-friendly Cadleigh Arms (01884 855238) and for a smart dinner, The Ring of Bells (01363 860111) is a recommended pub just over five miles from site at Cheriton Fitzpaine. To combine eating out with a little adventure try The Turf, a bike ride away from Exeter Quay or the River Exe Café (07761 116103) at Exmouth – reached by water taxi.
