A shepherd’s hut in its own garden on a farm on the edge of the Shropshire Hills

Fancy your own private glamping site? Don’t we all. Wouldn’t it be nice to have a little patch of countryside all to yourself with a shepherd’s hut to sleep in, a pond to fish in and a toilet and shower that you don’t have to share? We can’t help you out with owning the dream but we can present you the option to rent it. The Shepherd’s Loft in Shropshire is just as described.

Situated in a private paddock on a 260-acre family farm, this shepherd’s hut is just right for two. With the site and facilities to yourself, you might imagine that it’s high-end glamping on offer but that’s not what you get here at all. Instead, it’s glamping with a refreshing taste of simplicity; encouraging you to be more connected with your environment at every turn. Facilities are private but not en suite – so you have to step outside to use them. Lights and plug sockets are solar powered, heat comes from the log burner and cooking is done outside. Your daytime TV is watching sheep, cows and wildlife in the surrounding fields; your evening entertainment is the campfire. It’s a great mix for people who love the great outdoors but don’t find campsites fun. It’s comfortable (with bedding, logs, towels and toiletries provided) but not luxurious, showy or twee. Perhaps this totally practical approach to glamping – everything you might need is provided but nothing you don’t – comes from 120 years’ experience on the farm. That’s how long host Claire’s family has been here. Now she’s keen to share it.

If you fancy a spot of fishing, she’ll point you towards that private carp pool we mentioned or, if you want a walk, she’ll send you in the direction of the nearest hills (small by Shropshire standards). There’s a farm shop a mile down the road but for anything more than this little taste of rural life, including the closest pub, you’ll need to get in the car. And while it may sound like you’re miles from anything, it’s not far to some sites that make this part of the world seem like the centre of the universe. Apart from the age-old Shropshire Hills, a 15-minute drive can get you to the site of Roman Britain’s fourth largest city – Wroxeter, to Shrewsbury where Darwin was born, or to Ironbridge, the birthplace of the industrial revolution.

The Shepherd's Hut has a bench seat which pulls out into a full size double bed. Heated by a cosy log burner this hut is solar powered and has a power pack for charging your mobile phone or tablet, even using hair straighteners! The bathroom is a separate hut just a few steps away with gas powered shower and real toilet. Cooking on a gas bbq (tools, pans, crockery and kettle provided). Just a few steps from the barbeque is the hot and cold washing up sink. We also provide a cool box with ice packs. You can chill out in the evening infront of the kadai firebowl taking in the sounds of evening in the countryside. In the paddock there is lots of space to practice yoga, do some stretching or even set up a badminton net if you happen to have one!. If you have a fishing lisence and a rod you can have exclusive fishing on our pool which is stocked with Carp of varying sizes.

The Shepherd's Loft
Fantastic! We had a brilliant 4 night stay in this little gem of a hideaway! It’s a place where we had everything we needed & although we normally camp, thus is definitely a step up from camping! Our host Clare was there for us if we needed anything, although we didn’t need much, just a few extra logs for the fire pit at night. But apart from that we were left to our own devices in our own Shepherds hut, in our own little paddock on the farm with just birds, cattle, sheep & ducks for company- no air pollution! What really did it for me was the separate fully plumbed in hot shower & toilet just for us to use! A definite 5 stars from me for Glamping!

The Shepherd's Loft
My wife and I stayed at The Shepherd's Loft for my birthday weekend in May and we had such a wonderful time. The owners of the farm are really friendly and the views from the site are gorgeous. The accommodation is fantastic. It's really small but so cosy and welcoming. The bed's comfy and everything you need is supplied. The weather was horrible while we were there but it didn't matter because the log burner, which is really easy to use, kept us toastie and warm. The barbecue cooking facilities outside are great. It's undercover so it doesn't matter if it rains. It's a really posh barbecue and great fun to cook on. The loo and shower facilities are second to none....amazing considering it's in the middle of a field! I heartily recommend staying here. We'll definitely come back!

From the host
This quirky off grid Shepherds Hut in the heart of Shropshire is the perfect place to get away from it all and relax. Set in its own private paddock on a working sheep farm you can wake up to the birdsong or lambs bleating. The beautiful hut has a comfortable bench seat which pulls out into a full double bed. Just sublime for those long mornings to lie in bed and enjoy the sunshine streaming through the stained glass windows. There is a fold down breakfast table and a cosy log burner for those chillier evenings. Everything is solar power, we even have a solar powered power pack so that you can charge your mobile phone or tablet! Don't worry that you will have to 'rough it' as a few steps away is the bathroom hut, with gas powered shower and real toilet!. Cooking is on the gas powered bbq (tools, kettle, crockery and pans provided), and don't worry about those April showers, it has its own wooden shelter and close by a hot and cold washing up sink. We are happy to arrange for a Welcome Hamper packed full of yummy local produce if you preorder this. You can chill out in the evenings by the Kadai firebowl. The paddock has plenty of space for a bit of yoga, some stretching or even setting up a badminton net if you happen to have one. If fishing is your thing then choose a log and relax by the pool and see how many Carp you can catch, there are lots of different sizes. We are a working sheep and beef farm, but we also have chickens, ducks, geese and donkeys that we look after, aside from the hares, rabbits and wild birds on the fields. There a many footpaths that cross through the farm, or if you fancy a more testing walk or cycle we are a stones through from the Lawley and Caer Caradoc, even the Longmynd. We are a rural hamlet but with Shrewsbury just ten minutes away we have good access to the bigger transport links. Frodesley has its own honesty shop with fruit and veg, and more importantly the yummiest cakes and puddings made on site!
Nearby attractions

The shepherd’s hut is situated in its own private paddock and there’s an on-site pond, stocked with carp, which you have exclusive fishing rights to during your stay. The area is great for walkers with footpaths crossing the farm and a circular route passing through Frodesley and Acton Burnell, where you can see the ruins of 13th-century Acton Burnell Castle. For more of a hike, head for the hills: The Caradoc, The Lawley and Lodge Hill are all possible without using the car. From Church Stretton (eight miles away) you can hike up to some of Shropshire’s best known heights on The Long Mynd. There’s a National Trust car park and tea rooms in Carding Mill Valley (01694 725000) which is a good starting place for the walk. Wroxeter is 10 miles from site. There you can take an audio tour of what was once a thriving Roman city, now managed by English Heritage (01743 761330), and visit the family-owned Wroxeter Vineyard (01743 761888). Shrewsbury, Ludlow and Ironbridge are all within 15 miles of the farm.

Food and drink

You can pre-order a welcome hamper (for an extra cost) with a few local goodies to start you off and there’s an honesty shop a mile away that’s stocked with local produce and homemade ready meals. The closest pub is The Fox at Great Ryton (01743 718499), three miles away and comes highly-recommended for its friendly hosts and great food. A mile further on is the award-winning Old Hall Persian Restaurant (01743 719100). For more choice head to Church Stretton, eight miles away, where there are several pubs and an Indian restaurant.
