Adult-only camping amid the apple blossom of an award-winning cider orchard

You don't have to love to cider to adore this adults-only campsite five miles from the Jurassic Coast. But, if you do, you can almost certainly stop the hunt for your favourite campsite now. With pitches tucked in amongst the orchard and the camping area just an apple's throw from the Dorset Nectar taproom, this is a campsite with a visitor experience baked in. From taking a tour and learning about the origins of cider, to tasting the latest craft casks, campers here can immerse themselves in the wonderful world of apples at the same time as enjoying a campsite that is, quite simply, practical, friendly and fun.

Started by former sculptors Penny and Oliver Strong in 2006, the organic orchard produces award-winning ciders, sold around the country but also in the onsite farm shop, next to which you'll find the campsite's shower block, toilets and washing-up facilities. On arrival you're encouraged to salute your neighbours, the farm’s resident geese Sir Humphrey and Dame Maggie Smith, before making your way to a pitch in one of the rows of apple trees in the 3,000-strong orchard. All the trees are uniformly planted in a vast grid, which transforms into a stunning blanket of pink apple blossom through late May and June.

The farm shop is open until 10pm if you want to pick up fresh apple juice or local ingredients for cooking over the campfire (firepits are available for hire and logs are sold on site), while the adjacent tap room also opens for special events and frequent entertainment, with everything from folk singers to ska and rock from local musicians. That's not to say this is a wild and noisy place. In fact, don't be surprised to rise in the morning and spot deer ambling through the farm. Oliver and Penny's sculptures, too, dotted around the place – spot the diving dolphin, the seahorse and the turtle – show a real care and love for the entire space.

Getting off the farm is easy, you can follow one of the footpaths to the idyllic village of Netherbury or drive to the coast, with beaches like Eype nearby and the big cliffs of West Bay and Burton Bradstock offering filmic backdrops to your fossil hunting. The local town of Bridport has its fair share of quirky events, like The Bridport Hat Festival, the Bridport Folk Festival and, for the brave, the Annual World Nettle Eating Competition. After all those nettles no doubt you'll feel like a cider or two. Or you can buy bottles of nettle juice at the festival, if you really have been converted.

Campfires are allowed in raised fire pits and free wood is available from us. There is Wifi closer to the Cider Garden and picnic benches dotted around. We have two showers and four toilets which are cleaned daily to a high standard. Washing up basins are available to use and there are also multiple water points. Parking is located near to your pitch, at the beginning of your private cider apple orchard row.

Cider Farm Orchard Tent Pitch
End of Summer Week in an Orchard
Really loved our time at Dorset Nectar. The setting is beautiful, and camping amongst the trees was idyllic. Staying at the end of summer did mean the peril of getting hit by falling apples which was quite entertaining. The facilities are great - nice hot shower and nice loos (it would be great if there were more loos but apparently they're planning to build a new block in the Spring). The two lads behind the bar were super friendly and made us feel at home. Their dog is hilarious and the bonus cat is just gorgeous (even if she did move in of her own accord). Would love to come back again in the future. It'd make for a great wedding venue!

Nice Enough, needs some attention
It's a nice place, bar / chilling /picnic bench areas very well done, lovely ornamental gardens. The toilet and shower areas have been set up nicely, also liked the between the rows of apple tree pitches. Unfortunately the toilets and showers were very rarely cleaned. The washing up area at the far end of the tent pitches was also really grubby, as in hadn't been wiped down for many days.

Quiet, spacious and clean orchard
This was our favourite camping site to date. It’s a wonderfully quiet orchard setting and the space between pitches affords privacy and calm. That quiet theme is reinforced by an absence of pets and large families resulting in a respectful adult only environment. The clubhouse is a great refuge when it gets a little chilly or damp and the team can’t do enough for their guests. The cider on offer is an unusual bonus for a camp site and although we missed it weekends feature live music and food. We would heartily recommend this site. The shower and toilet facilities were fine for us but queues form when it is busy and I believe the owners have great plans to expand a new shower block. Overall 5 stars

Lovely weekend away
The whole experience was lovely. The orchard is a beautiful place to camp and the staff are very polite and helpful. Facilities are very well maintained and nice to use and the cider tour is great!

Beautiful stay
Beautiful and private camping pitch. The site was full during our stay but it didn’t feel too busy. We didn’t use the communal area with benches but it would have been a useful area with a group of friends. Would have been useful to have a toilet near the shower and wash up facilities as it meant a walk across the site to the only toilets. Toilets and showers were clean.

Nearby attractions

Stay onsite and take part in a taproom tour and tasting to complete your experience. This part of Dorset is an area of outstanding natural beauty and, while you can forge your own path down to the coastline, smaller walks from the farm lead to Furleigh Estate Vineyard (01308 488991; one mile) or Mangerton Mill & Gardens (01308 485224; three miles), both excellent days out. You can also take a walk down a bridal path from the farm to visit Hugh Fernly Whittingstall’s original River Cottage. It's a 15 minute drive to the best of the western stretch of the Jurassic Coast. Dramatic West Bay is great for fossil hunting and is the nearest beach, along with Burton Bradstock, while Charmouth and Lyme Regis are 25 minutes by car and it's a half-hour drive to Chesil Beach. On rainy days, drive the half hour to Dorchester, which has a slew of different museums.

Food and drink

Apart from the on-site tap rooms, The Hare and Hounds Inn (01308 488203) is within walking distance of the orchard (around 10 minutes or less) and serves delicious food with killer views of the valley. If you're heading to the beach, try the West Bay beach food huts for a food market-style grub and book in for a fancy cocktail and oysters at Rise café and bar (01308 422 0110). The George (01308 423191) in West Bat boasts harbour views and and has a wonderful atmosphere come sunset. For cream teas and great sandwiches try West Bay Tea Rooms (01308 455697).
