At Mayday Retreats you can spend evenings around the campfire, mornings on the yoga mat and afternoons in the pool. That’s right — the pool. This is a rare find: a small campsite with a heated indoor swimming pool. And, better still for some of us, it’s reserved just for grown-ups. Here, you won’t be dodging water-bombing kids to swim a length but can book a private two-hour session so you can swim or float about undisturbed.
It’s an adults-only site in Lincolnshire combining the fresh air of camping and the relaxation of a spa break. As well as sessions in the pool, optional extras include Thai massage, meditation and yoga sessions. All in all, it’s a rather peaceful place to be with no dogs, no kids and no motorhomes or caravans in sight. There are ten pitches for campers with their own tents and a pair of furnished Lotus Belle tents for those who want to take it really easy, all in a flat two-acre meadow.
Facilities — other than the swimming pool which is accessed through a gate and private garden — are pretty simple: a pair of composting toilets, a flushing loo and a shower. There’s a big tent for Saturday morning yoga sessions and a mess tent where tea and coffee-making facilities are laid on, and washing-up can be done undercover. Everything is kept in perfect running order by Lisa, the amiable, capable owner of the place. She’ll welcome you to the site, give you lots of local info and then leave you to enjoy your peaceful patch of Lincolnshire countryside.
Surrounded by trees and green, Mayday Retreats is surprisingly close to the A15, just over 10 miles north of Peterborough, which makes getting here and getting around very easy. You can zip along to Bourne Woods for a walk, venture to one of the historic houses in the Lincolnshire countryside or head to Rutland Water, just 20 miles away. Or you could just stay on-site and busy yourself with the important business of campfires, yoga, swimming, massage and general relaxation.
